DX QUICK TIPS

Busy times here at the moment, especially with my daughter's wedding coming towards the end of this month. She lives in Osaka, Japan but the wedding will be here in Australia near our Mount Evelyn home. She is marrying a fabulous Japanese man and we are very excited about the coming event. But because she is not here to take the reins, we are doing much of the legwork in pulling the preparations together. So, busy, busy, busy...
Anyway, here are some items noted over the past two weeks. Several were special Christmas broadcasts, but most are daily services.
5910 VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Christmas Mass at 2045 with French commentary and a very strong signal. Parallel 9700 also heard but not as strong there, big signal, Dec 24.
7365 VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Christmas Mass at 2100. Some impressive brass playing, too!!! Fair signal with English commentary, Dec 24.
9645 PHILIPPINES. R. Veritas Asia - Palauig. S/on at 0000 with preaching in the Kachin language to SEAs. Kachin is spoken by people of the Kachin State in Northern Myanmar as well as by citizens of Yunnan province (China), where the language is known by the name Jingpho. A weak signal, Jan 6.
🎅🎄 9650 AUSTRIA. NDR - Moosbrunn. Once again, the Austrian relay was best here for the annual NDR Xmas service at 2110. Other relays heard were 9590-Issoudun (fair signal) and 9765-Nauen (good), Dec 24.
🎅🎄 9790 AUSTRIA. NDR - Moosbrunn. Annual Xmas program with talks, Xmas songs in German at 2030, a very good signal to SAs. Also noted // freqs of 9740-Nauen (good signal) to Indian Ocean, and 9800-Issoudun (fair) to SAf. Weak carriers only on 6010, 6080 and 11650. Dec 24.
9809.97 INDIA. AIR - Panaji. A weak signal with bad squealy modulation at 1220 in the Telugu service to SEAs. S/off past the scheduled 1245 at 1252. Dec 30.
11580 USA. R. Argentina al Exterior - Okeechobee FL. French to Eu at 2330 with ID and news. Weak signal, Jan 4.
11665 MALAYSIA. RTMalaysia - Kajang. Relay of Wai FM's music programming at 2345, weak and fading out, Jan 4.
11680 D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Kanggye. Massed choral item at 0004 with brief Korean anncts, fair signal, Jan 4.
11740 INDIA. AIR - Panaji. Dari talks and songs beamed to Afghanistan at 0335. Horrible squeal in the modulation easily identifies this as Panaji. The same technical problem as the 9810 kHz evening service. Weak signal and s/off 0345 on Jan 5.
👍 11745 SAUDI ARABIA. Al-Azm Radio - Jeddah (??). Heard fading in at 0535 with Arabic songs. Previously scheduled to s/on 0700, but perhaps running 24-hrs now?? A weak signal to start, and deteriorated even further by 0700, Jan 4.
👍 11790 MADAGASCAR. Bible Voice - Talata Volonondry. The Gospel of the Kingdom program in English at 0210, BV ID at 0229 and s/off 0230. A fair signal but actually good for 1:10pm local time in high summer on an all-daylight path across the southern Indian Ocean. Not much else on the band except for a multitude of weak China outlets on Jan 6.
11790 MADAGASCAR. MWV R. Feda - Mahajanga. Arabic to ME at 2250 with a long song, then ID and s/off at 2256, fair to weak signal on Jan 6.
11820 PHILIPPINES. VoA - Tinang. Burmese to SEAs with news at 0130 s/on. Aoki lists this as Kuwait, but I suspect it is Tinang as listed in HFCC. Weak signal, Jan 5.
11840 CUBA. R. Habana - Quivican. Discussion program in Spanish at 0550, ID and theme music 0559, s/off 0601, weak signal, Jan 4.
11860 SAUDI ARABIA. Rep. Yemen R. Sana’a - Riyadh. Long Arabic talk at 2304, then a song at 2312. Weak signal on Jan 6.
11900 PHILIPPINES. Vatican R. - Tinang. Vietnamese to SEAs at 2320. Started out as a fair signal but by s/off at 0000 it had almost faded. Jan 6.
👍 11905 SRI LANKA. SLBC - Trincomalee. Lovely local vocal numbers and anncts in possibly Hindi between 0205 and 0230. Weak signal and noted under the dominant CNR 6's Amoy service. Seemed to s/off around 0231. Jan 5.
11995 SINGAPORE. BBC - Kranji. Burmese to SEAs at 0215 with commentaries, weak signal, Jan 6.
12130 KUWAIT. R. Mashaal - Umm al-Rimam. Pashto service for Pakistan with news at 0605, weak signal, Jan 4.
12140 KUWAIT. R. Azadi - Umm al-Rimam. About the same weak signal as 12130 at 0607 for the service to Afghanistan, Jan 4.
13695 INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. Indian pop (or Bollywood) songs and Hindi anncts at 0355. Fair signal, Jan 5.
13745 THAILAND. R. Thailand - Ban Dung. Thai news at 0242 and occasional jingle adverts, weak signal, Jan 6.
💤💤 13760 D.P.R.KOREA. VOK - Kujang. English service to SAm at 0500 with choral and instrumental music selections. Not sure why they think this is a good time to catch the South American audiences - It's midnight in Bogotá and 3am in Rio de Janeiro! Kim must be after the shift worker demographic!! Furthermore, a quick scan of the KiwiSDRs in Brazil, Chile and Bonaire indicate no reception at that time! Weak signal on Jan 5.
13830 BOTSWANA. VoA - Moepeng Hill. French to WAf at 0540 with news and current affairs. Runs weekdays only. Fair to weak signal on Jan 5.
15275 NTH MARIANA IS. R. Free Asia - Tinian. Khmer service to SEAs at 2245 with news reports, fair signal, Dec 24.
👍 17500 VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Special Epiphany celebration broadcast at s/on 0855 in Portuguese to WAf. Also heard were 17520 in French and 17530 in English. Weak signals from all three outlets, but the choral music was brilliant and made for joyful listening!! However, by 1000, 17500 kHz had improved considerably while the other two outlets were still quite weak. Jan 6.
17510 INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. Indonesian to SEAs at 0850, big signal, Jan 6.
👍 17520 VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Special transmission at s/on 1050 for the Pope's Orbi et Orbi Christmas message to the world. Fair level to WAf with French commentary. Also heard were 17535 (SMG) to WAf with English commentary at a fair strength, and 17550 (SMG) to SAf with Portuguese commentary at a weak level. 17550 also had a break in transmission early for some minutes but returned after 1100 at a slightly improved level. S/off 1130 on Dec 25.
17530 TURKEY. VoT - Emirler. S/on 0500 in Malay to SEAs, weak signal with news on Dec 26.
17540 GUAM. KSDA - Agat. AWR programming in Tagalog at 1045 to the Philippines, a fair signal until s/off 1059, Dec 25.
17629.97 THAILAND. R. Thailand - Ban Dung. Thai service to ME at 1010, good signal, Jan 6.
17660 IRAN. VOIRI - Sirjan. Kazakh service to CAs at 1015, ID at 1020, then the usual piano theme to off at 1022, fair signal, Jan 6.
17710 SOUTH AFRICA. DW - Meyerton. Swahili service to EAf at 1025 with current affairs reports, weak signal, Jan 6.
17760 KUWAIT. R. Kuwait - Sulaibiyah. Filipino service to the Philippines at 1030, fair signal, Jan 6.
❓❓❓ 17795 UNIDENTIFIED. Possibly a South or South East Asian language with international current affairs program at 1040, instrumental music at 1058 then suddenly off at 1100, seemingly without ID. A very good signal on Jan 6. Tried again on Jan 7 but nothing heard.
17805.07 SAUDI ARABIA. R. Saudi (BSKSA) - Riyadh. Arabic discussion program at 0935 for the service to NAf, off-frequency and a fair signal, Jan 7.
19010 KUWAIT. R. Azadi - Umm al-Rimam. Dari service with talks at 1050, fair signal on Jan 7.
✅ 21670 SAUDI ARABIA. R. Saudi Int'l (BSKSA) - Riyadh. Indonesian at 1o40 with a fair to good signal, and this was the only station on the band at this time, Dec 25.
