A25 TRANSMISSION SEASON
110 NEW FREQUENCIES MONITORED
The new A25 transmission season began on March 30. I have been scanning the international shortwave bands, checking out what has changed since the start of this new season. Below is a record of some observations made during the first weeks after the changeover.
For each item, I have tried to identify the former frequency used in the B24 season. But this is sometimes quite hard because schedules can be complex or drastically changed by the broadcaster, making it difficult to make direct comparisons.
There are more than 110 frequency and schedule changes listed below. So if you are missing your favourite station, it could be listed here!
NOTE: It is not possible in this list to cover every frequency change in my monitoring. Sometimes, I have to sleep when my northern hemisphere friends are awake! There are many more frequencies for you to chase down, and I encourage you to do so! It's fun to play "detective"!
Some additional points to note:
Some additional points to note:
- Consider the suspension of all Voice of America broadcasts (including VoA Deewa Radio, VoA Studio 7, and VoA Radio Ashna). Include the resultant impacts on broadcasters who used or leased time at VoA/USAGM transmitter sites, such as Radio Free Asia, Radio Thailand, Radyo Pilipinas, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (inc. Radio Mashaal, Radio Farda), and Radio Martí. Then, include the cessation of most Adventist World Radio broadcasts (except for the AWR-owned station at Guam), which occurred at the beginning of the B24 transmission season. All this has resulted in much less frequency shifting and juggling of schedules than in the past. Holes are opening up throughout the international bands across the shortwave spectrum. Suddenly, the shortwave dial is looking decidedly quiet! Except for China, of course! If all the stations mentioned above never return to shortwave, there will not be a need for the HFCC frequency registration process. Broadcasters could park their signals wherever they like (facetious comment😏).
- The list is in frequency order. The countries listed are where the transmitter sites are located. Many broadcasters use transmitters in other countries to achieve better reception in the target zones. For example, the world-famous BBC is currently using this long list of relays for the A25 transmission season: Oman, Ascension Is, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, United Arab Emirates, Vatican City, and Madagascar, as well as its own transmitters in Woofferton, England!
- In most cases, I have listed the sign-on and sign-off times for each broadcast. These are represented by asterisks * before the sign-on time and after the sign-off time. I hope readers will find this information more useful.
- Australia is not part of the target zones for just about all of these broadcasts. The era of services beamed specifically to Australia stopped years ago. Well....except for China Radio International (aka CGTN Radio) and Radio Romania International, of course! So, comments on signal strength, as noted here at Mount Evelyn, are largely irrelevant and have not been included, except for a few remarks on interference (QRM) from other stations. In the designated target zones, listeners should find good to excellent reception from many of their favourite broadcasters.
- All observations are based on actual monitoring from my receivers here at Mount Evelyn. Occasionally, remote SDRs are called upon to 1) confirm the Mount Evelyn reception or 2) monitor propagation conditions in or near the target zone for specific broadcasts. These remote tools are handy for checking the impact of interference, if any, of co-channel or adjacent channel broadcasters.
- Some DX lists compare new frequencies with "ex" frequencies used for the same transmission season in the previous year (i.e. A24 compared with A23). I don't find this helpful system, and it can cause confusion. Yes, I know that a few stations will often try to use the same frequencies for the previous 12-month period. However, from a regular shortwave listener's perspective, at the start of a new season, they want to know if the frequency has changed since they last listened on the previous day or the previous week. They won't remember a frequency from two seasons ago!
- You may see an occasional change to some of the frequencies listed below in the upcoming weeks. This is not unusual, as broadcasters may discover they have clashed with other stations or receive reports of poor reception in the target zones. Sometimes, everything can take a few weeks to settle in a new transmission season.
- I have added a Station/Frequency Cross-Reference List at the end of this post. With so many stations running new frequencies, it can be hard to find the station you want when scrolling through the long list of items below. So, for a specific station, you can check the compiled frequencies in the cross-reference list. Hopefully, this makes it easier to find your desired station. Let me know if you find this reference list useful.
