We've been continuing on our long journey back down the east coast of Australia. By August 20, we had arrived at South West Rocks, on the mid north coast of New South Wales, an especially beautiful area with lovely bays and rugged coastlines.

In the mid afternoon of Sunday August 21, I took myself off to the nearby beach of Arakoon for a spot of DXing. Once again, I used the Tecsun PL-680 portable receiver and rolled out the antenna to about 25 metres in length. And once again, careful selection of the location meant that power lines and houses were a considerable distance away from my antenna, allowing me the joy of a noise-free environment for listening.

We are now well into late-winter here in Australia. Spring is just around the corner. And the lower frequencies during daylight hours are starting to become much less reliable compared to reception in mid-winter. But with a low noise floor, I was still able to grab a few signals in this mid-afternoon listening session, especially on the 60 and 49 metre bands!

And, I had some local native friends around to keep me company!

ARAKOON BEACH AUG 21, from 0530 to 0600 UTC (3:30 to 4pm local time) - 60mb

4710 - 4750 Asian (mainly Japanese) fishing vessels in 2-way contacts, all on USB.

4835   AUSTRALIA. VL8A - Alice Springs. Booming signal.

4840   USA. WWCR - Nashville TN. Fair signal with heavy VL8A Alice Springs QRM 4935. Got stronger later.

4910   AUSTRALIA. VL8T - Tennant Creek NT. Aussie rules football broadcast, good signal.

5015   USA. WRMI - Okeechobee. Overcomer Ministry, fair signal and improving quickly.

5020   SOLOMON ISLANDS. SIBC - Honiara. Live cricket broadcast! Haven't heard this type of programming before on SIBC. Good signal.

5025   CUBA. R. Rebelde - Bauta. Strong signal and with just a hint of VL8K Katherine NT underneath. Later ABC is much stronger till their eventual s/off at 0830.

5040   CUBA. R. Habana - Bauta. Nice signal with English to CAm. This is a semi-regular winter signal back home, but nice to hear it also much further up the eastern Australian coast at this time.

5830   USA. WTWW - Lebanon TN. American preaching. Good signal.

5850   USA. WRMI - Okeechobee FL. Overcomer Ministry. Good signal.

5890   USA. WWCR - Nashville. TN. Overcomer Ministry. Good.

5935   USA. WWCR - Nashville TN. American preaching. Good signal.

5950   USA. WRMI - Okeechobee FL. Overcomer Ministry. Fair signal.

5985   USA. WRMI - Okeechobee FL. Overcomer Ministry. Good signal but QRM co-channel CRI-Cerrik.

5985   ALBANIA. CRI - Cerrik. Arabic to NAf, weaker than TOM but still quite readable.

5995   MALI. RTV du Mali - Bamako. As usual, this has a strong carrier but extremely low audio. However, today without any noise levels, I could detect Malian songs and occasional anncts in what was probably the Bambara language. Back home, I can nearly always hear the carrier but never the programming.

6000   CUBA. R. Habana - Quivican. English to ENAm, fair signal. Also 6060 at fair level,

6005   ASCENSION IS. BBC - Ascension. English WS to WAf, fair to poor signal.

6030   USA. R. Marti - Greenville NC. Spanish, fair signal.

6070   CANADA. CFRX - Toronto. Very weak signal, but nice to hear its 1kW here.

6080   SAO TOME. VoA - Pinheira. English to Af with pop music programming, fair to poor signal, via the long path.

6090   ANGUILLA. Caribbean Beacon. American preaching, very good signal.

6100   CUBA. R. Habana - Bauta. Booming signal for English to WNAm. Complete with bouncing kangaroo.

6135.2   BRAZIL. R. Aparecida - Aparecida. Easy listening Brazilian pops and relaxed anncts. Fair signal.

6180   BRAZIL. R. Nacional Brasilia - Brasilia DF. Very strong signal at 0640.

7260   VANUATU. R. Vanuatu - Port Vila. Bislama news, ID 0708.

7355   USA. WHRI - Cypress Creek SC. Overcomer Ministry, strong.

The rest of this band was empty here in this time period.
