SHORTWAVE IN THE NEWS - No. 5

Hi Folks,

This blog has been a little quiet over the past few weeks. My wife and I took a few days holiday during the second half of June. It was GREAT ......until I became ill on the last night before coming home. Since then, I've been battling a severe infection that has caused me to lie low for the past two weeks. I've even been too sick to turn on the radios! But, I'm now starting to feel somewhat human again (....although I probably don't look human!!), so hopefully I can get back into some shortwave listening and the MEDXR blog in the coming days.

SHORTWAVE IN THE NEWS

Here's some interesting reading that has popped up over the past couple of weeks from online sources. Sit back, relax and check these out over a warming coffee, tea, or whatever your favourite poison!  ðŸ˜Ž

China's Bid to Squeeze Radio Taiwan International Out of AIB Fails

Journalism Through Chat Media
It was early in the morning when hundreds of WhatsApp-messages started pouring in. An hour after newsreader Ahmed from Radio Dabanga had announced the WhatsApp number to their Sudanese listeners. He and his team expected the initiative to be successful but were overwhelmed by the reactions. Even the app couldn't handle it and crashed due to all incoming messages.

From Propaganda to Journalism: How Radio Free Europe Pierced the Iron Curtain
The end of the Second World War signalled the beginning of an information war in Europe. As the military alliance between the Soviet Union and its main western allies — the United States and Britain — came to an end, the USSR backed small communist parties that asserted ever-tighter control over much of Eastern Europe. This is an excellent article on the history and some new insights into Radio Free Europe.

AIR Shortwave Digital Transmitters to Beam Pakistan, Afghanistan
All India Radio would be commissioning of two new Shortwave Solid State digital transmitters of 100 kW power each for the dissemination of content across the border for Afghanistan- Pakistan region by the end of August 2017. The transmitters shall be installed in Delhi. For the Andaman and Nicobar, a new 100 W FM transmitter would be installed in Car Nicobar by the end of the financial year.

Radio Reaches Blocked Countries
International radio remains the most reliable, robust source of information for people in some nations...... North Korea is rated as the second most censored county in the world after Eritrea, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. North Koreans who are caught accessing information not approved and disseminated by the government can be sent to brutal prison camps for extended terms, or face execution........ In North Korea, some people get around jamming by using home-built antenna tuners that minimize the jammer’s interference with reception of the desired distant signal. Other listeners modify their fixed-tuned radios to tune across the bands; allowing them to capture the South Korean and international stations that the state doesn’t want them to hear. An excellent article on the important and relevance of shortwave today.
