2017 WINTER DX SURVEY
After more than two months of monitoring research, I've gathered together information for the survey I have been conducting on the lower high frequencies during our winter DX season. Focusing on afternoon reception and involving more than 50 days of listening, I have compiled notes and a list of all stations monitored during that time. Many of the stations noted will be easily heard by MEDXR readers located in the northern hemisphere!
A short YouTube video below explains a bit more on what this report is all about:

Rob...what a great little resource you have provided with your fall listening project! Many thanks for sharing. Have you been doing something similar for midwinter as well? I've recently once again become curious about HF international SW bands and what is out there and your publication is very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of questions re antennas....how do you find the horizontal loop compares with your other wires and, when in the field, have you considered throwing out some really really long beverage on the ground style of antenna? My main interests have been focused on LF and MF but I'll bet there is some interesting stuff to hear from your quiet remote locations.
I really am enjoying your videos as well, all very professional!

G'day, Steve. Thanks for your generous comments, much appreciated. The survey ran from May through to the beginning of this month, so late autumn (fall) and past the winter solstice (mid winter). Already, as we start to come out the back end of winter, I am noticing that the lower HF freqs are losing their potency during the afternoons. The phenomena only lasts a couple of months at the most. Then the rest of the year, it's pretty quiet down there during the day.
DeleteAntennas: The horizontal loop is proving effective against local manmade noise and is a very good alternative compared with the other antennas on the property. I'm about to make a video on this antenna, so watch out for it. You'll see some comparison tests.
Re. beverages, I haven't done serious MW DX in many years. And I haven't strung really long antennas out when in the bush. About the longest I go is 50m (165 ft) when going portable, finding that's sufficient for good SW reception. However, it would be nice to reel out something really long at some good location and leave it there for future visits! Hmmm....might do just that one day!
Best 73, Steve

Thanks Rob. I look forward to your loop report! I hope that you get the chance to string out something really long and have a look on the BCB or on the NDB band. Magical things begin to happen at 2500' !
ReplyDeleteI have done my latest blog about your great survey and have posted a link on the Facebook WRTH page.
