THE SPECTRUM MONITOR
September Issue Looks at Icom IC-R8600

I really believe that the best value communications magazine on the market today is The Spectrum Monitor! This monthly publication offers an annual subscription for only US$24 - that's only US$2 per issue! And the September issue has just been published. So for readers of this blog, let's take a look at just some of the great articles included this time around:

Icom IC-R8600 All-Band All-Mode Software Defined Receiver
By Bob Grove W8JHD
The latest and greatest receiver from Icom was released several months ago. Bob Grove takes a close look at the specifications of this unique receiver and is pretty excited by what he finds! I think this receiver could be of interest to MEDXR readers....but you'll need a few $$$ in your pocket if you want to buy one!

Electrical Pioneers: The Life and Times of Guglielmo Marconi and Ernst Alexanderson
By Georg Wiessala
This article reflects on the work of Guglielmo Marconi and Ernst Alexanderson and is full of various tidbits of information and anecdotes - nicely researched.

Rocky Mountain Ham Radio Inc., - the Dayton Hamvention 2016 Club of the Year
By Wayne Heinen N0POH
The story of a radio club with a difference.

Twentieth-Century Military Monitoring—This isn’t Your Daddy’s Milcom Anymore
By Larry Van Horn N5FPW
Larry is well-known for his many years of writing in the communications field. For his first column in this September issue, Larry offers a four-page primer on getting started in monitoring Military communications.

Tracking the Buzzer: The World’s Most Popular Radio Station?
By Hugh Stegman NV6H
This month's "Utility Planet" column discusses the UVB-76 "Buzzer" station and has some new insights into possible transmitter locations for this strange station. A fascinating column this month!

Shortwave Broadcasters Meet on the West Coast of North America for the First Time
By Jeff White
As many MEDXR readers will know, Jeff is the General Manager of WRMI. In this six-page "World of Shortwave Listening" column, he reports on the activities of the NASB (National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters), the latest developments in DRM, the SWL Winter Fest, new leadership at the helm of Adventist World Radio, and some advances in long distance mediumwave (AM) broadcasting.

North vs. South Korea on Shortwave, CFRX, BBC Programming and More!
By Fred Waterer
Fred's excellent monthly review of shortwave programming is always worth a read! This month's title says it all.

Antenna 101: A Nuts and Bolts Review
By Dan Farber AC0LW
In "Antenna Connections", Dan discusses grounds and feedlines for your antenna system. There are always lots of common sense suggestions for making your antennas work better for you in this monthly column.

PLUS LOTS MORE.....!

The Spectrum Monitor is distributed every month in a PDF format and is around 90+ pages. So, at US$2 a copy by annual subscription, it's the best value on the planet! However, if you don't want to take out a subscription (....and I can't imagine why you wouldn't!) then you can purchase individual back issues at US$3 a copy.

(Disclaimer: Yes! I contribute to the "World of Shortwave Listening" column three times a year. But don't let that put you off! 😉😄)

73 and have a great weekend everyone!

Rob Wagner VK3BVW

P.S.  This post is being written while lying flat. An acute lower back injury last Thursday has meant lots of pain and occasional outbursts of colourful language! I just hope that none of that language has made its way into the above post! 😇

  1. Hope you are feeling somewhat better soon Rob....nothing worse than severe back pain and pinched discs. Get lots of ice on it.

    1. Thanks for that, Steve. Unfortunately, sitting in front of the radio or the computer is quite painful. So, I'm having to manage the time spent at those devices. Best 73 to you, Rob
