DX QUICK TIPS - March 5, 2018

DX QUICK TIPS
March 5, 2018

As occasionally happens around here, we received notification that the power would be off for maintenance on our street all day on March 1 (UTC time). Fantastic! An opportunity for some low noise daytime reception from the comforts of home!

As I wasn't particularly inclined to haul the big 12v auto battery from the garage to the radio shack, I made do with some fully charged batteries in the little Tecsun PL-680, plugged into my horizontal skyloop and other big antennas in the backyard.

All the logs below were heard between 8 am and 2 pm local Australian Eastern Daylight Time. Many on this list are more commonly heard during mid-winter. But good reception conditions on the day, coupled with lower than average noise levels made it possible to extract some signals.

👍👍 5885   BOTSWANA. VoA - Moepeng Hill. Weekdays-only French service to WAf at 2115 with an English language lesson entitled “What Colour is Your Eyes”. Fair signal, closing ID at 2130 then into Bambara language programming.

5905   FRANCE. R. Algerienne - Issooudun. Arabic to WAf with Qur’an readings at 2125, good signal on the 194˚ beam heading, and // 5940 where the signal was even stronger beaming at 160˚. 5940 signs off at 2158 approx, but 5905 was still audible right up until its 2300 s/off, although it was much weaker by that time.

👍👍 5915   ZAMBIA. ZNBC - Lusaka. At 2130 with on-location news reports in one of the many local (vernacular) languages. Afro pops at 2136, and telephone talkback at 2143. S/off at exactly 2159. Fair signal.

5935   IRAN. VoIRI - Sirjan. Indonesian service to SEAs at 2235, fair to poor signal.

5955   IRAN. VoIRI - Sirjan. Japanese to EAs at 2140 to s/ off, fair signal.

👍👍 5965   GUAM. KSDA-AWR - Agat. A weak and fluttery signal across an all-daylight morning path at 2147 in Korean to EAs until s/off 2200. Not bad reception for off-the-back-of-the-beam!

6090   PHILIPPINES. Vatican R. - Palauig. Mandarin service to EAs at 2205. Fair to poor signal and heard over the co-channel CNR 2-Geermu.

7300   OMAN. BBC - Al Seela. English WS to SEAs at 2225 with sports news, good signal.

✅✅ 7410   VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Mandarin to EAs at 2227, a good signal for this time of day on this band, s/off 2230.

9570   ALBANIA. CRI - Cerrik. Mandarin to NAm at 0259, ID at 0300. Weak signal via this European relay, but not bad considering it’s the beginning of March, usually much stronger in our winter time (May to Aug).

✅✅ 9600   MADAGASCAR. MWV African Pathways R - Mahajanga. English to SAs at 0252 with pop song, then suddenly off at 0257 without any further anncts. A variable signal from weak through peaking to a fair level at times.

👍👍 9636.7   VIETNAM. VoV - Son Tay. Network 1 in Vietnamese at 0246 with news reports. Interesting short path daytime propagation with a fair signal.

9650   TURKEY. VoT - Emirler. Spanish to CAm at 0240, good signal.

9740   ROMANIA. RRI - Tiganesti. Spanish to SAm at 0305, weak signal today but will improve by winter.

9865   INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. The Vividh Bharati service with music programming and Hindi anncts at 0232. Fair reception at 1:32 local AEDT.

👍 9935   GREECE. VoGreece - Avlis. Music and Greek anncts at 0220. Not often heard at this time of year in the middle of the day (1:20 pm AEDT), more like winter reception. Fair signal.

11560   INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. Dari service to SAs at 0310 with news, good signal.

11740   INDIA (Goa). AIR - Panaji. Dari to Afghanistan at 0315, finishing the news then into a music program. Good signal and // 11560.

✅✅ 11745   SAUDI ARABIA. Al-Azm R. - Jeddah. Arabic talks for the Saudi military at 0318. Fair signal but with adjacent QRM from 11740 India.

11790   JAPAN. R. Japan - Yamata. Japanese to EAs at 0323, weak signal.

👍 11860   SAUDI ARABIA. Rep. of Yemen R. - Riyadh. Arabic talks at 0326, good signal.

13650   D.P.R.KOREA. VoK - Kujang. The usual opening choral number, ID in Mandarin and more joyous songs at 0335. Fair signal.

13695   INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. Hiindi service to ME at 0340, with music programming and a big signal.

13760   D.P.R.KOREA. VoK - Kujang. Spanish to LAm at 0343, fair to poor signal.

13860   UAE. R. Azadi - Dhabayya. Pashto talks at 0350, good signal.

And finally,

The station formerly known as Dengê Kurdistanê is now Dengê Welat.

9525   FRANCE. Radyo Dengê Welat - Issoudun.  Kurdish music program at 0540 to WAs, until suddenly off at 0558, fair signal, Mar 5.

11530   PRIDNESTROVIE. Radyo Dengê Welat - Kishinev. Sudden s/on at 0600 in the middle of a song, taking over from the 9525 kHz outlet. Majestic theme music and ID at 0601 with many mentions of Kurdistane, a canned annct and then Kurdish news reports and live crosses from 0603. Good signal. Runs // 7520 kHz via Gavar, Armenia also heard but a weaker signal there (although this freq should be quite strong in Eu). Mar 5.

73 and good DX to you all,

Rob Wagner VK3BVW

    1. Thanks Victor. I'll put in an order for some good DX while you are here! Jan is retiring at the end of this month, so we will be dashing off for a few short holiday trips during the winter months. Let me know as soon as you have some arrival/departure dates confirmed. Rob.

  2. Very nice! I have 12v back up power in the ham shack and occasionally test it but hard to get the rest of the community power down doe some serious dxing. :) By the way, as so many new gadgets come out and are plugged in - I have discovered many new RFI issues across the HF spectrum. In years past it had been very very quiet in my community. Very disruptive noises on 160m and also on 60m. Thanks for the report Rob! 73 and happy listening! Mark KB0NMQ Iowa USA

    1. Thanks for your comments, Mark. Yes, RF hash continues to increase every day. I have found some success with a horizontal skyloop antenna in the past few months, but that's for receiving, not transmitting. At other times, I just leave the house and DX in the bush. Cheers, mate. Rob
