DX QUICK TIPS - December 30, 2018

DX QUICK TIPS
December 30, 2028

Like many other DXers, I have been quite active on the shortwave bands over the Xmas - New Year holiday break. There is plenty of good DX to be enjoyed out there! Here's a few from my list of recent logs. Most were heard in the period between December 26 and 29:

πŸ‘ 5045   AUSTRALIA. Unique Radio - Gunnedah, NSW. At 1035 UTC with the “Sounds of Your Life” music show. I can report that it was NOT the sounds of MY life! A woeful selection of second-rate antique pops from the 50s and early 60s, interspersed with pointless background info on where each song appeared in the Billboard Top 100! I’d had enough by 1115 UTC and decided it was time to move on. Transmitting in LSB mode and mixed in with the usual summer atmospherics. Interestingly, I heard this station better at my location than on any of the Kiwi SDRs located in NSW. Dec 26.

πŸ‘ 5950   ETHIOPIA. Voice of Tigray Revolution - Addis Ababa. Some great regional African music and Tigrinya anncts at 1940, a fair signal. Various lists are showing R. France Int’l via WRMI in English at this time, but nothing heard here or on any remote SDRs from RFI.

πŸ‘ 6090   ETHIOPIA. Amhara State R. - Addis Ababa. I believe this is the one after the CRI s/off at 1957 in Amharic. A fair strength from its carrier but the modulation was way down. Talks and occasional Afro regional music. Faded by 2010.

πŸ‘ 6110   ETHIOPIA. R. Fana - Addis Ababa. Rhythmically vibrant African songs at 1935. A good signal but with heavy co-channel QRM at equal strength from CRI-Xian’s Russian service till that one signs off at 1957. Then R. Fana can be enjoyed in the clear with a beautiful signal and great music.

6145   CHINA. PBS Qinghai - Xining. Presumed to be the weak signal here at 1209 with chat in Mandarin and soppy music. Runs // 9780 but even weaker there.

6150   CUBA. R. Habana - Quivican. S/on a minute late at 1201 to NAm with full ID in Spanish. A fair signal with some splash from the strong CNR 2 on 6155.

7275   AUSTRIA. AWR - Moosbrunn. Hausa to CAf at 1915, outdoor interview, fair signal.

πŸ‘ 7280   VIETNAM. VoV - Son Tay. English to Eu at 1900 to s/off at 1927. Then s/on 1930 in French. Fair signal but some splash from AWR on 7275.

πŸ‘ 7495   UZBEKISTAN. North Korea Reform R. - Tashkent. Korean commentaries at 2040. A weak signal and faded by 2100.

9335   THAILAND. VoA - Ban Dung. Burmese to SEAs at 0145, weak signal.

9400   PHILIPPINES. FEBC - Iba. Mandarin preaching to EAs at 1122, excellent signal.

9410   SINGAPORE. BBC - Kranji. English to SAs at 0149, fair signal.

πŸ‘ 9525   PRIDNESTROVIE (Moldova!). Radyo DengΓͺ Welat - Grigoriopol. Kurdish news reports at 2015. Frequent technical breaks (interruptions) in transmission noted over a 25 min listening period. Otherwise, the signal was strong….when it was there!

9625   PALAU. R. Japan - Medorn. Indonesian to SEAs at 1138. Nice signal.

πŸ‘ 9634.91   VIETNAM. VoV - Son Tay. Network 1 service in Vietnamese, noted at 0305 (1:05pm AEDT), but can be heard most of the daylight hours here. Fair signal.

πŸ‘ 9720   SRI LANKA. Sri Lanka BC - Trincomalee. Hindi (?) to SAs at 1117 with a selection of local songs. A beautiful signal.

9750   JAPAN. R. Japan - Yamata. Japanese to EAs at 1105, very good signal but with a slight het from R. Kuwait in Arabic on the off-channel 9749.8 kHz.

9765   THAILAND. VoA Deewa R. - Ban Dung. Pashto to Afghanistan at 0310, weak signal.

😑 9850   CHINA & D.P.R.KOREA.  A quagmire here at 1220 with PBS Qinghai via Xining in Tibetan PLUS VoKorea - Kujang in Korean. And possibly even Sound of Hope also heard here, and all at fairly weak signal strengths.

9865   INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. Vividh Bharati service to SAs with pleasant instrumental music at 0315 and Hindi anncts. Good signal.

9950   INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. Nepali service at 0325 with music programming, fair signal.

11530   PRIDNESTROVIE. R. DengΓͺ Welat - Grigoriopol. Kurdish to the ME at 1130, a Kurdish song at 1134. Very good signal. This service runs from 0600-1500, and I can hear it for pretty much the entire time.

πŸ‘ 11620   PHILIPPINES. VoA - Tinang. To SEAs at s/on 1130 with slow English until s/off 1200, NF (ex 17790) and a very good signal. // 15715 (also very good) and 12125 (weak signal) both via Ban Dung also heard, Dec 10.

πŸ‘ 11850   SINGAPORE. BBC - Kranji. English to EAs at 1240 with a discussion on racism in England, NF (ex 15510), very good signal, Dec 12.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ 13780   UZBEKISTAN. R. Japan - I suspect this was via Tashkent. Special one-day broadcast to improve relationships and friendship between Japan and India. Noted at 0435 until s/off at 0500 after time pips and one min of instrumental exit music, languages used were Hindi, Bengali and Urdu. Fair signal on Dec 7.

13580   THAILAND. R. Mashaal - Ban Dung. Pashto commentaries interspersed with songs at 0450, a fair signal.

13860   UZBEKISTAN. BBC - Tashkent. Farsi discussion at 0440, a fair signal.

15180   D.P.R.KOREA. VoK - Kujang. Music selections at 0425, then a commentary in English to SAm at 0435. Somewhat muffled audio on the talking…..I just love my English muffled!!! Fair to poor signal.

15185   INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. Hindi service with music at 0410, then into the Gujarati language at 0415 with commentaries. A fair signal.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ 15285   GERMANY. Athmeeya Yatra R. - Nauen. Good to see the return of this station after an absence from the SW bands. S/on 1230 with a clear ID in the Kashmiri language to SAs on Thursdays (various other languages on other days of the week). A fair signal.

15500   SRI LANKA. AWR - Trincomalee. Amharic service to EAf at 0400-0430. A good signal but heavy QRM from the stronger co-channel CNR 2.

πŸ‘ 15570   CHINA. CNR 11 - Baoji (Shaanxi province). Broadcast in the Kham language first noted at 0330 (s/on 0300) to 0400, when it then changes to Tibetan. A fair signal. There are a few regional dialects of Kham, which is spoken in Nepal and parts of Tibet. It is a complex Sino-Tibetan language. Indeed, some consider Kham to be a Tibetan dialect, although listening to this broadcast, there is a distinctly different sound between Kham and Tibetan.

17710   CHINA. CRI - Jinhua. Russian to EEu at 0335, fair signal.

17810   JAPAN. R. Japan - Yamata. Japanese to SEAs at 0330, very good signal.

πŸ‘ 17820   PHILIPPINES. Radyo Pilipinas - Tinang. At 0318 in English with travel chat and pop songs in English. A somewhat tinny narrow audio bandwidth….were they phoning this in to Tinang? :-). Weak signal.

21600   PHILIPPINES. VoA - Tinang. Tibetan service at s/on 0300 to EAs. A weak signal but no jamming and also noted on // 21795  via Tinang with a weak signal, and also on 17865 with a good signal.

73 and have a great weekend everyone!
