DX QUICK TIPS

Nearly two weeks ago, I had a fall, twisting an ankle, smashing up the knee cap and face-planting the ground. After two days of swollen agony, I decided I needed some attention from the local hospital's Emergency Department. I am still a tortoise with a limp! But between compression bandages and leg elevation, I managed to hobble out to the radio shack on a few occasions. Here are some afternoon and evening winter DX observations, focusing on the 49 and 41-metre bands.

EQUIPMENT: Yaesu FTDX3000, MFJ-1026 Noise Canceller, and the Behringer 4-channel mixer
ANTENNAS: Dipoles for 10 and 14 MHz

⭐ 5950 USA. Supreme Master TV - Okeechobee FL. Vegan chat and thanks for donations at 0750. Plenty of IDs. Fair signal on July 25.

5975 AUSTRIA. R. Japan - Moosbrunn. English to Eu at 0445, weak signal until s/off 0500, July 23.

6005 ENGLAND. BBC - Woofferton. S/on 0500 with English WS news to WAf, weak signal, July 23.

6015 ROMANIA. RRI - Galbeni. French to SEu at 0509, weak signal July 23.

⭐⭐ 6070 CANADA. CFRX - Toronto. Advert for iHeart Radio at 0734, telephone numbers for phone-in, then general chat on the Coast-to-Coast show. A weak signal on July 25 but pretty good for a non-directional antenna with only 900w into SE Australia (16200 km)!

6100 CUBA. R. Habana - Bauta. English news to WNAm at 0507, fair signal, July 23.

6155 AUSTRIA. R. Oesterreich Int’l - Moosbrunn. German to Eu at 0511, fair signal, July 23.

⭐⭐ 6185 MEXICO. XEPPM R. Educación - Mexico City. “Sonic Farfalla” by Rodrigo Sigal, the Mexican composer of Electroacoustic music. Fabulously freaky futuristic “otherworldly” sounds on shortwave!! Quarter tonal and microtonal harmonies. Noted at 0715 with a fair signal, ID at 0732. July 25.

⭐ 7220 D.P.R.KOREA. VoKorea - Kujang. S/on 1100 in Mandarin to EAs with interval signal and anthem. Fair signal and no sign of the scheduled co-channel VoVietnam also in Mandarin, July 24.

7295 FRANCE. R. Algerienne - Issoudun. Fair signal in Arabic service to CAf at 0515 with Qu’ran. July 23.

7345 VATICAN. English WS at 0518 to WAf with commentary, fair signal, July 23.

⭐⭐ 7345 MYANMAR. Thazin Radio - Pyin U Lwin. At 1120 with an interview program in the Minorities Service in one of the local languages. Seemed to be a change of language at 1130. Fair signal and mixed with the weaker co-channel CNR 1. July 24.

⭐ 7355 USA. KNLS - Anchor Point AK. A very good signal at 1206 in English with American preaching, then “Underdog” by Alicia Keys. Running // on 9795 with a fair signal there, July 24.

7375 GUAM. KSDA - Agat. AWR programming in Mandarin to EAs at 1140, weak signal, July 24.

7390 FRANCE. R. France Int’l - Issoudun. French news reports to CAf at 0521, fair signal, July 23.

⭐⭐ 7420 INNER MONGOLIA. PBS Nei Menggu - Hohhot. A weak signal at 1140 in Mandarin but on a clear channel so easily monitored. Mostly commentary/interview programming, but canned anncts and jingles at 1158. Time pips and ID at 1200. The // 9520 was also heard but an even weaker signal there, July 24.

7460 BOTSWANA. VoA - Moepeng Hill. Just caught the last few minutes of the Kinyarwanda service to EAf at 0524 to s/off 0529, fair to poor signal, July 23.

7490 USA. WWCR - Nashville TN. Discussion on the Civil War at 1205, fair to good signal on July 24.
