DX QUICK TIPSSeptember 5, 2020
This week, a new antenna has been added to the "Mount Evelyn antenna farm" - a 95 meter (312 feet) long horizontal loop in a (sort of) a squat rectangular shape. It stretches out across the creek in the gully with supports from a huge gum tree, a willow tree, a fence and an aluminimum pole. I'm still running tests on it and comparing it against my 10 MHz inverted vee and the 14 MHz double bazooka. But the new loop certainly boosts up signals across most of the shortwave spectrum!
ππ 3945 VANUATU. R. Vanuatu - Entem Lagoon. Bislama talks and discussions at 0735, fair signal. The station’s “accidental international service” continues with uninhibited harmonics happily radiating on 7890 and 11835 kHz. The 25mb harmonic propagates quite strongly at 0500 with its slowly swishing surge/fade/surge signal, characteristic of propagation across this distance (3150km between the txer and my Mt Evelyn rx - see video below). Sep 3 and 4.
3959 D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Kanggye. Orchestral pop music at 1153, fair to weak signal, Sep 1.
ππ 5995 MALI. RTV du Mali - Bamako. A very long talk in French at 0732. Started out as a fair signal but weakened by 0745. Several seconds of music then s/off at 0759. Via the long path, Sep 1.
The great circle long path track (dotted red line) from Mali to Mount Evelyn at 0730 UTC on September 1.
Over the Atlantic, up through Canada and into the Pacific. A distance of 23,828 km (14,806 mi).
5020 SOLOMON ISLANDS. SIBC - Honiara. At 1155 with a religious program in English. Then at 1200, an ID “You have been listening to the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Service” with mention of the frequency and then abruptly off at 12:00:30. Fair signal, Sep 1.
π 5050 CHINA. Voice of Beibu Bay Radio - Nanning. Vietnamese language service with many music selections at 1205, fair signal, Sep 1.
11745 SAUDI ARABIA. Al-Azm Radio - Jeddah. Friday Qur’an at 0532 for the Saudi troops serving near the Yemeni border, fair to poor signal, Sep 4.
11790 JAPAN. R. Japan - Yamata. Russian to EAs at 0545, fair signal. No propagation to Mt Evelyn from the co-channel R. France Int’l-Issoudun in Swahili to EAf. A check of EAs SDRs and SDRs near EAf confirms that the two services can be heard well in their target zones and not get in each other's way. An example of good frequency management! Sep 4.
15435 PHILIPPINES. FEBC - Bocaue. At 0032 in the Shan language to SEAs, fair signal, Sep 2.
15590 THAILAND. R. Thailand - Ban Dung. English to NAm at 0015, a weak signal here. I tried many KiwiSDRs in the U.S. and not a strong signal on any of those either on this day. At 0030, the station changes beam direction from 6˚ to 38˚ for the continuation of English to WNAm and reception was marginally better from some of the US SDRs. However, the best reception was observed via HL3AMO’s KiwiSDR in Daejeon, South Korea! Sep 2.
15640 PHILIPPINES. FEBC - Bocaue. Burmese to SEAs 0010, weak signal, Sep 2.
17650 GUAM. KSDA - Agat. AWR Mandarin programming to EAs at 0001, fair signal, Sep 2.
17790 SRI LANKA. AWR - Trincomalee. Arabic to ME at 0520, weak signal, Sep 3
17880 THAILAND. R. Azadi - Ban Dung. Dari to Iran at 0527, weak signal, Sep 3.
73 and have a great weekend everyone!
