A23 TRANSMISSION SEASON

150+ NEW FREQUENCIES MONITORED

The new A23 transmission season began last weekend. I have been scanning the international shortwave bands, checking out what has changed since the start of this new season. Below is a record of some early observations made during the first five days since the changeover.

Where possible, for each item, I have tried to identify the former frequency used in the B22 season. But this is sometimes quite hard because schedules can be complex or drastically changed by the broadcaster, making it difficult to arrive at direct comparisons.

There are 150+ frequency changes listed below. So if you are missing your favourite station, it could be listed here! 

NOTE: It is not possible in this list to cover every frequency change in five days of monitoring. There are many more frequencies for you to chase down, and I encourage you to do so! It's fun to play "detective"!

Some additional points to note:

1. The list is in frequency order. The countries listed are where the transmitter sites are located. Many broadcasters make use of transmitters in other countries to achieve better reception to the target zones. e.g. the world-famous BBC is currently making use of this long list of relays for the A23 transmission season: Oman, Singapore, Armenia, Ascension Is, São Tomé, Philippines, Tajikistan, United Arab Emirates, the Vatican, and Madagascar as well as its own transmitters in Woofferton, England!
   
   
2. In most cases, I have listed the sign-on and sign-off times for each broadcast. These are represented by asterisks * before the sign-on time and after the sign-off time. I hope readers will find this information more useful.
   
   
3. Australia is not part of the target zones for just about all of these broadcasts. The era of services beamed specifically to Australia stopped years ago. Well....except for China Radio International (aka CGTN Radio), of course! So, comments on signal strength as noted at Mount Evelyn have, in most cases, not been included in this list. In the designated target zones, listeners should find good to excellent reception from many of their favourite broadcasters.
   
   
4. All observations are based on actual monitoring from my receivers here at Mount Evelyn. Occasionally, remote SDRs are called upon to 1) confirm the Mount Evelyn reception, or 2) monitor propagation conditions in or near the target zone. These remote tools are particularly useful for checking the impact of interference, if any, of co-channel or adjacent channel broadcasters.
   
   
5. Some DX lists compare new frequencies with "ex" frequencies used for the same transmission season in the previous year (i.e. A23 compared with A22).  Personally, I don't find this system useful and can be confusing. Yes, I know that a few stations will often try to use the same frequencies for the previous corresponding 12-month period. However, from a regular shortwave listener's perspective, at the start of a new season, they want to know if the frequency has changed since they last listened on the previous day or the previous week - They won't remember a frequency from a season ago!
   
   
6. You may see an occasional change to some of the frequencies listed below in the upcoming weeks. This is not unusual, as broadcasters may discover they have clashed with other stations or receive reports of poor reception in the target zones. Sometimes, it can take a few weeks for everything to settle in a new transmission season.
   
   
7. NEW! At the end of this post, I have added a Station/Frequency Cross-Reference List. With so many stations running new frequencies, it can be hard to find the station you want when scrolling through the long list of 150 items below. So, for a specific station, you can check the compiled frequencies in the cross-reference list. Hopefully, this makes it easier to find your desired station. Let me know if you find this reference list useful.

 

Equipment: Yaesu FTDX3000 transceiver, Kenwood R5000 receiver, Kenwood TS2000 transceiver.

Antennas: 100m long horizontal sky loop antenna, a delta loop antenna for 10 MHz, a double bazooka antenna for 14 MHz and a 5/8λ centre fed vertical for 21 MHz and above.

❓❓ 17470  UNIDENTIFIED. Noted at 1730 to well past 1815 - noisy music with drums, Middle Eastern-sounding wind instruments and macho male singing, long energetic speeches and much cheering. The language resembled Kurdish or similar. No ID heard. Booming signal here into SE Australia and the strongest on the band at this time. Needs more research! Mar 27.
