DX QUICK TIPS - May 14, 2023

DX QUICK TIPS
May 14, 2023

⭐ 2349.39   D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Sariwon. 1350 Korean radio play, preachy overtones. Rarely heard here, and a weak signal. Aoki lists this as 5 kW into an ND antenna. Noted // 3250, where it was much stronger with its reported 100 kW output. May 9.

⭐ 3310  BOLIVIA. R. Mosoj Chaski - Cotapachi, Cochabamba. 1045 Programming in Quechua with talks and Andean-styled instrumental and vocal selections. Definitely NOT Spanish at this time. However, the Quechua used here is liberally sprinkled con muchas palabras en español. A weak signal, but will hopefully improve during our winter season here. May 12.

(circa March 2019)

3325   INDONESIA. VoIndonesia - Palangka Raya, Kalimantan Tengah. 1020 English beamed to whoever can pick up the signal. A mix of topical and touristy news items separated by soppy pop ballads. 1034 ID and frequency annct mentioning the two SW outlets of 3325 and 4750 KHz. The carrier was reasonably strong, but the audio was well down, making listening difficult. // 4750 was stronger and clearer. May 12.

⭐ 3900   INNER MONGOLIA. PBS Hulunbuir - Hailar. 1432 Mandarin talks. Eventually, a female announcer signed off at 1441. Listed as 10 kW and a fair signal on May 9.

⭐ 4765   TAJIKISTAN. R. Tajikistan - Dushanbe. A weak and slightly distorted signal at 1905 in presumed Tajik. Russian and Uzbek can also be heard at other times of the day on this frequency. Commentaries. This txer site is reported in some lists as Yangi-yul', near the border with northern Afghanistan. However, I understand the site is about 9 km south of Dushanbe. May 10.

4775.04   PERU. R. Tarma - Tarma. 1010 Andean-influenced musical selections with anncts. Weak but readable, May 12.

⭐ 4810   PERU. R. Logos - Chazuta. Believed to be this one at 1005 with a feeble signal. No ID was heard, but I could confirm its presence with the stronger signal via the Bonaire KiwiSDR. 1010 - "El Pescador" by Marcos Vidal, 1014 - "Un Toque de tu Amor" by Veinte Veinte. The carrier suddenly disappeared at 1015 for one minute, then returned with just dead air. Finally returned at 1024 with the continuation of "Un Toque...". A rare visitor here at Mount Evelyn! May 11.

4885   KOREA REP. Echo of Hope - Seoul. Commentaries 1845. Heavy jamming on both this channel and the adjacent 4880 and 4890, although there was nothing to jam on those two slots! May 10.

4930   BOTSWANA. VoA - Moepeng Hill. 1840 Heavily accented English with discussion, fair to poor signal with QRM from the co-channel Russian air horn channel marker. May 10.

⭐ 4965   ZAMBIA. Voice of Hope - Makeni Ranch, Lusaka. 1830 English to SAf, Gospel rock songs, fair to poor signal. Nothing was heard on // 6065, so it seems that 49mb transmitter remains off-air awaiting repairs. May 10.

⭐ 4985   BRAZIL. R. Brasil Central - Goiânia GO. 1002 Brazilian ballads and short anncts. A weak signal with local atmospherics, May 12.

⭐
6180   BRAZIL. R. Nacional Amazônia - Brasilia DF. 0805 Random chatter/waffle from male announcers and random songs such as "Bebendo e Chorando" by Irmãs Freitas. Plus, some rooster wake-up calls and telephone talkback! Booming signal (not usually this good) and // 11780, where it was not as strong. May 12.

⭐ 6185   MEXICO. XEPPM R. Educación - Mexico City. 0810 The usual excellent esoteric musical selections. I enjoyed the significantly twisted-sounding "Usanza Unza!" from the Tres Tristes Tangos album. Fair signal but with splash from strong 6180 Brazil, May 12.

7410   ESWATINI. TWR - Manzini. 1930 Portuguese to Angola with preaching. Fair signal, May 10.

7489.93   UZBEKISTAN. Voice of Martyrs - Tashkent. S/on 1900 Korean to D.P.R.K. Commentaries and occasional pop music selections until s/off 1930 after a brief ID. Heavily jammed. May 10.

7730   USA. Overcomer Min via WRMI - Okeechobee FL. 1045 American "God botherer", good signal and // 7780. May 14.

⭐ 9585   ESWATINI. TWR - Manzini. 1453 Interval signal and repeated English annct as "This is TWR, broadcasting from Eswatini". Then at 1455, into the Malagasy language, beamed to Madagascar with ID and talks. Scheduled for Malagasy on weekdays and French on the weekends. Fair signal but with splash from 9580 KNLS until that station signed off at 1458. But then TWR was squashed by some big co-channel QRM from CRI's Japanese s/on at 1458! May 9.

9645   TAIWAN. Voice of the Revival of Korea - Tamsui. 1403 Korean to NEAs. Good signal into Mt Evelyn but with significant siren jamming. A check of HL5NTR's Daegu remote SDR showed a solid signal and was hardly bothered by the jammers. May 9.

⭐ 9670   TAIWAN. R. Dáp Lòi Sông Núi - Paochung. The siren jammers started up at 1229, followed by DLSN at 1230 with ID in Vietnamese to SEAs. Good signal and easily heard over the jammers, May 11.

⭐ 9900   TAIWAN. R. Northern Europe Int'l - Paochung. S/on 0925 with annct about comb stereo encoding. ID then a program of pop and alternative musics. Just another pop music station.S/off at 0955, very good signal, May 6.

9930   UZBEKISTAN. Voice of Martyrs - Tashkent. S/on at 13:29:30 Korean to NEAs. ID, a few seconds of Korean instrumental music, then into a commentary. Good signal, May 9.

11620   UZBEKISTAN (Allegedly!) Voice of Martyrs - Tashkent, Uzbekistan. 1505 in Dhivehi to the Maldive Islands. No English programming was heard during the 20 min of monitoring. Very good signal and never really sounds like the usual Tashkent transmitter quality! May 9.

17725   AUSTRIA. AWR - Moosbrunn. 1420 Urdu to Pakistan, talks, probably preaching. Full ID and address at 1427, s/off 1429, May 9.

17815   GERMANY. R. Farda - Lampertheim. 1415 Farsi to Iran. Electronic dance music programming....that's bound to jazz up the ayatollahs!! Fair signal, May 9.

21560.15   U.A.E. BBC - Dhabayya. 0500 s/on English WS to EAf, fair signal, news and sports reports. Well-off frequency and with a rumbly background hum. May 10.

21710   U.A.E.  Mizzima R. - Dhabayya. 1215 Burmese commentaries, many mentions of Myanmar. Fair signal, May 11.

EQUIPMENT: Yaesu FTDX3000, Kenwood TS2000, Kenwood R5000, Horizontal Sky Loop 100m long, 10 MHz Delta Loop, 14 MHz Double Bazooka, 5/8 wave centre-fed vertical for 21-30 MHz.
