AUSSIE PIRATE ON ABC FREQUENCY
Unlike the USA and some of Europe, Australia rarely has pirate radio activity. When it does appear, it pops up suddenly for a very short time and disappears just as quickly, usually because the programming is rubbish and/or nobody knows about it.Well....it didn't take long!
My colleague and fellow amateur radio operator, Peter Parker VK3YE, just happened to be monitoring 4835 kHz on the evening of January 31. Readers will recall that the ABC's Northern Territory Shortwave Service outlet from Alice Springs was the permanent resident on this frequency until midday on the 31st when, like the Tennant Creek and Katherine transmitter sites, it was shutdown.
But, Peter heard something else on the supposedly empty channel that evening! At the same time, I could hear something on the frequency, but the signal was erratic and quite weak into Mount Evelyn. Peter's recording was much better. Check it out!

Thanks Peter! Great find!
Could this be the start of more pirate activity in Australia?
73 and good to you all,
