DX QUICK TIPS - August 3, 2019

DX QUICK TIPS
August 3, 2019

With little to no sunspot activity going on at the moment, listening for stations above 14 MHz in the evening won't provide much joy. However, during the daytime, you will hear quite a few frequencies in operation, especially for those listeners enjoying the last of the northern hemisphere summer. And the lower frequencies (4-10 MHz) will continue to provide good and mostly reliable reception in the evenings.

My friend and Asia DX expert, Ron Howard (Asilomar Beach, CA, USA), continues to monitor the challenging broadcasts from east and southeast Asian nations. Here are three of his latest observations:

⭐⭐ KOREA SOUTH. 5920, Voice of Freedom, on July 29, with extremely rare day of no N. Korea jamming; 1100+; variety of K-pop songs (Twice - "Dance The Night Away" etc.) and announcers in Korean. Outstanding reception as usual when there is no jamming! My unedited audio of 1100-1110 at http://bit.ly/2K21lV9 (2:15 on my audio is Twice's song, in English and Korean) and 1130-1140 segment at http://bit.ly/3128HxK (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA)

⭐⭐ LAOS. 6130, Lao National Radio, 1158, July 29, with certainly one of their better receptions; indigenous instrumental music; at ToH, clearly heard gong rung slowly seven times (7PM in Vientiane); choral anthem. Great to hear LNR at this respectable level. My audio at http://bit.ly/2ZkTxTG (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA)

⭐⭐ VIETNAM. 8812-USB, Ho Chi Minh Radio - Vietnam Coast Station, *1242-1244*, July 29. In English with warning about a low pressure that will be developing into a tropical cyclone. Map tracing the projected path of the low pressure, turning into cyclone at http://bit.ly/2K0yjVTMy local sunrise was at 1311 UT, with Ho Chi Minh sunset at 1117 UT (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA)

Thanks so much for those tips, Ron. Lao National Radio on has been quite intermittent in recent weeks on 6130 kHz, so it's indeed great to hear it back on the air again. - Rob

And now, a few DX tips from Mount Evelyn as observed over the past few days:

6055   JAPAN.  R. Nikkei - Nagara. Network 1 domestic programming at 0715 with a weak signal but improved by 0815, July 26.

⭐⭐ 6070   CANADA. CFRX - Toronto. Still being heard here as we approach August, usual early morning chit-chat and discussion programming at 0740, a weak signal but doing well for its 900 watts, July 26.

⭐ 6090   ANGUILLA. Caribbean Beacon - Anguilla. University Network with American preaching at 0705, fair signal, only irregularly heard here, July 26.

⭐⭐ 11610   USA. WEWN - Vandiver AL. Interesting propagation when noted at 0205. A very fluttery WEWN signal under the co-channel CNR 2-Beijing that had much longer, deeper fades and a slightly stronger signal. VOACAP HF predictions indicate that WEWN could be either borderline short path or long path to Mount Evelyn. Normally, I hear just CNR but certainly something different going on in the upper atmosphere on July 28.

11670   CUBA. R. Habana - Bauta. Spanish to SAm at 0215, a weak and fading signal, no sign of the usual CNR 2 on this channel. July 28.

⭐ 11740   INDIA. AIR - Panaji (Goa). Pashto to AFG and PAK at 0220. A weak signal and appeared to be suffering from some type of transmitter squealing sound. July 28.

⭐ 11745   SAUDI ARABIA. Al-Azam R. - Jeddah. Qur’an chants at 0400, no anncts on over 15 min of monitoring, fair signal, July 28.

⭐ 12010   PHILIPPINES. R. Pilipinas - Tinang. Noted at 1230 with the usual landline telephone quality audio for their news program, weak signal, July 28.

12035   KUWAIT. VoA Deewa R. - Umm al-Rimam. Pashto to AFG at 0345 until s/off 0358, fair signal, July 28.

12050   IRAN. VOIRI - Sirjan. Listed as the “Voice of Palestine” program at s/on 0320 to ME, a massive signal on July 28.

12095   OMAN. BBC - Al Seela. English WS to ME at s/on 0300. A weak signal on the short path across SAs and the Indian Ocean, July 28.

⭐ 13580   MADAGASCAR. BBC - Talata Volonondry. English WS to EAf at 0740 to s/off 0759, fair signal, July 27.

13635   TURKEY. VoT - Emirler. Turkish to Eu at 0615, fair signal, July 28.

13745   THAILAND. VoA Deewa R. - Ban Dung. Pashto to Afghanistan 0145, fair signal with some multi-path echo, July 28.

⭐ 13745   IRAN.  VoIRI - Sirjan. Arabic to ME, scheduled to s/on at 0600, finally arc-ed up the transmitter at 0603. NF (ex 13640) and a weak signal on July 28.

13760   D.P.R.KOREA. VoK - Kujang. Russian to Eu at 0722, orchestral favourites (!), fair signal, July 27.

13780   SAUDI ARABIA. R. Saudi Int’l - Riyadh. Arabic to ME noted just after s/on at 0606 with some most un-Qur’an-like contemporary Arabic pop music with a  female singer. Fair signal on July 28.

13860   THAILAND. R. Farda - Ban Dung. At 0715 in Farsi to Iran, fair signal, July 27.

⭐ 17785   PHILIPPINES. VoA - Tinang. The one-hour Tibetan service to EAs at s/on 0400, NF (ex 21600) Sat/Sun only, fair signal with no jamming, July 28.

73 and have a great weekend everyone!
