SHORTWAVE ACTION ON 12 MHz

SHORTWAVE ACTION ON 12 MHz

Over the years, I have noticed that some shortwave listeners tune just the lower parts of the 25-metre band, stopping just before they reach 12 MHz. I am not sure why this is so. But nevertheless, it is worth checking out the top end of the 25mb because there is plenty to hear up on 12 MHz.

Here in Australia, we are still officially in the winter season. At nighttime, the bands above 14 MHz have been largely devoid of signals, especially as we are going through this extended period of the absolute sunspot cycle minimum. But for listeners in the northern hemisphere, I expect that monitoring of the 25, 22 and 19mb during your summer months would have yielded a few good catches on those bands. Soon, the reverse will happen - the northern hemisphere listeners will find the higher frequencies going quiet during your coming winter evenings, but those bands will open up somewhat for us here in the southern hemisphere during our approaching summer season.

Across these seasonal variations, propagation characteristics will change somewhat, but overall the 25mb remains fairly reliable for long-distance multi-hop shortwave communications. For northern hemisphere listeners, many of the stations in the list below will be heard very well. Indeed, signals are often better than here in the southern hemisphere, purely because there are many more broadcasts beamed to northern hemisphere target zones. Down here in southeastern Australia, hardly any broadcaster beams to my part of the world these days!

The list below was developed over a few days in this past week and covered the listening periods of 1100 to 1530, 1600 to 2000, and 0500 to 0800 UTC. How many of these stations can you hear at YOUR location? Have you discovered other stations that are NOT on this list below? (hint: there are plenty to add to this list!)

  1. Hi Rob. Very good report. I also pick up some of these stations you mentioned. As for BBC on 12095kHz I get to tune it MON-FRI 2000-2200UTC and 2000-2100UTC from Ascension. I was also able to listen to Radio Mongolia on 12085kHz at 0900UTC in English sometime ago. I believe they may still broadcasting on this frequency for it is listed on eibispace. 73! 1. Julio, Mongolia's signal does not propagate very well here at 0900, but is better later in the evening. Tonight, I can hear audio on 12085 at but there is a nasty hum sound from the transmitter. Ascension Island is often poor reception for us here in SE Australia. 73, Rob VK3BVW
