DX QUICK TIPS

August 18, 2019

It has been a little while since I looked down on the "tropical bands" (as they used to be known) during my early mornings Two listening sessions between 1830 and 2100 UTC (4:30 and 7:00 am my local time) make up the list below. Some good catches in this lot:

2850   D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Pyongyang. Korean commentary at 2007, into a rousing choral number at 2010, fair to good signal, Aug 16.

3220   D.P.R.KOREA. PBS Pyongyang Pansong - Hamhung. Barely audible signal with Korean talk at 1950. Aug 16.

⭐ 3325   PAPUA NEW GUINEA. NBC -Bougainville. Early morning pop dance music, PNG style (well…..at least that’s what it sounded like!), perhaps designed to put a spring in the step of sleepy locals at 1954 with no ID or time check at 2000. Short Tok Pisin annct at 2005 then back into it again with dance-style pops. Fair signal, Aug 16.

⭐⭐ 4750   BANGLADESH. Bangladesh Betar - Shavar. Long talks in Bangla with occasional short music excerpts at 1920. A Bangladeshi ballad at 1938. Strong signal and also a strong transmitter hum on Aug 16…..however, this is better than on Aug 12 when there was a nasty transmitter buzzing sound and no audio! Voice of Indonesia was barely audible under Betar. In Jakarta, however, the KiwiSDR reveals a very strong VoI in Dutch, but also Bangladesh was easily heard (with its hummy transmitter) underneath.

4750   INNER MONGOLIA. CNR 1 - Hailar (Nei Menggu Autonomous Region of China). Mandarin chat at 2013 (probable s/on sometime after 2000 following the Betar s/off, I guess), good signal, Aug 16.

4765   TAJIKISTAN. R. Tajikistan - Yang Yul. Long Tajik talks at 1830, fair signal, Aug 12.

4885   KOREA REP. Echo of Hope - Seoul. Korean K-Pops at 1836, good signal, Aug 12.

4930   BOTSWANA. VoA - Moepeng Hill. Noted in one of the Zimbabwean languages and NOT the listed English at 1840 with a telephone interview and discussion. Later, noted in English at 1913, Fair signal, Aug 12.

⭐⭐ 4949.77   ANGOLA. R. Nacional - Mulenvos. Channel A service in Portuguese at 2030, a weak signal, Aug 16.

⭐ 4960   SÃO TOMÉ. VoA - Pinheira. Hausa service to WAf with what appeared to be a current affairs program at 2038. This 30-min service runs 2030-2100 with Hausa on weekdays and scheduled English on the weekends. A weak signal, Aug 16.

⭐⭐ 4965   ZAMBIA. Voice of Hope Africa - Makeni Ranch, Lusaka. English to SAf at 1845 with music and chat until s/off 1900. Fair signal Aug 12.

⭐⭐⭐ 5009.94   MADAGASCAR. R. Madagasikara - Ambohidrano. Music programming and Malagasy anncts in 1848. News reports, commentaries and interviews from 1900. Back into selections of pleasant local music programming from 1945. Monitored to well past 2030. Although the carrier was fairly strong, the audio level was often down throughout the transmission. Aug 12. But on Aug 16 at 1940, no sign of Madagasikara here or on the ZS6A KiwiSDR in Jo’berg. Sp this operation would seem to be irregular.

5020   SOLOMON ISLANDS. SIBC - Honiara. Hymn and religious talk in English at 1908, fair signal, Aug 12.

5055   AUSTRALIA. 4KZ - Innisfail QLD. Many lists show this as signing on at 1955. However, on Aug 16 it clicked on at 2033 with the usual pop fare and a strong signal.

⭐ 6090   ETHIOPIA. Amhara State R. - Addis Ababa. Horn of Africa music selections with frequent anncts at 2040. S/off ID and national anthem at 2059, revealing a much weaker co-channel CNR 2. An excellent signal on Aug 16.

⭐ 6110   ETHIOPIA. R. Fana - Addis Ababa. Amharic chit-chat anncts and occasional music selections at 2043. S/off anncts at anthem at 2102. A fair signal with slight co-channel QRM from PBS Xizang, Aug 16.

73 and have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Hi. I'm happy you confirmed Bangladesh Betar on 4750kHz. I get to listen to them here in Porto Alegre-RS, southern Brasil either with the radio whip or a small hula-hoop antenna in a park nearby. I also get to listen to a noise that is characteristic of fluttering due to another station broadcasting in this same frequency, which I presume is Radio Indonesia. I get to listen to Radio Solomon's carrier with no audio on 5020kHz very early in the morning. VOA 4930kHz comes in fair and sometimes fair to strong. I've also been able to listen to All India Radio Chennai, Jaipur and Mumbai all over 60m. There's also Radio San Juan of San Juan Chiquito, Bolivia on 5580kHz. There are others, but I don't recall right now. Some of these receptions took place in Terra de Areia-RS, southern Brasil and were only possible due to a new arrangement I made with randomwire antennae connected to an MFJ-1026 noise canceler. It brought back 120-49m. I'm going to suspend these wires and use different length for each one, so that I can alternate them as auxiliar and main antennae regarding the band I'm scanning. Best wishes.
