SOME SUNDAY ONLY BROADCASTS

Of the remaining broadcasters on the shortwave bands, a number of these are not on daily schedules. Some are weekdays only, some are Monday/Wednesday/Friday, some are weekends only, a few have broadcasts on Saturdays only, and so on. In my search through the schedules, I found an Arabic broadcast that is scheduled for just the 5th Sunday of the month (see the Vatican on 15595 kHz below)! That's just four Arabic broadcasts in 2020 at that particular time slot!

Below is a list of observations made this past weekend - on February 9 - of just a few of the services that are heard on Sundays only. Here in the southern hemisphere, some signals are well down in strength. But for northern hemisphere listeners, you can expect to hear many of these signals at a much stronger level.

5850 USA. WRMI - Okeechobee. Shortwave Radiogram between 0800 and 0830, good signal and // 7730 kHz with a very good signal

6100 CUBA. R. Habana - Bauta. Scheduled for Esperanto to WNAm on Sundays only between 0800-0830. Nothing heard! No more Esperanto or is this a stuff-up by the RHC staff?

7250 VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Romanian to EEu at 0810, noted to past 0900 but with a weak signal throughout.

7730 USA. WRMI - Okeechobee FL. Hobart R. Int’l program for 0800-0830, fair signal, and the // 5850 kHz was barely audible.

7780 USA. WRMI - Okeechobee FL. Wavescan DX program at 2100 to 2130, a weak signal.

7780 USA. WRMI - Okeechobee FL. VORW Radio International program with the usual chat and music format at 2200 to 2230. A fair to weak signal, but there seemed to be some distorted crosstalk modulation with some other programming content mixing under the signal. Strange!

9645 VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Ukranian to EEu from 0705 to 0800, good signal. Nothing heard on // 11740 kHz, but also noted on 11935 kHz (also via SM Galeria) at an almost equal level with co-channel CNR 5 (Beijing).

11680 ZAMBIA. Voice of Hope Africa - Makeni Ranch. English to WAf from 0600 to 0630 with the Wavescan DX show. Included an interview with Thomas Witherspoon from the Ears to Our World program. Weak signal.

11825 USA. WHRI - Cypress Creek SC. American preaching with extended service beginning at 1000 to past 1100, (other days of the week the service runs 0900-1000 s/off), excellent signal.

11965 GUAM. KTWR - Agana. American preaching at 1000 to 1030 s/off to Indonesia, fair signal. English only on Sundays at this time, on Mon-Fri the language is Madurese.

13790 UAE. BBC - Dhabayya. The 30-min Sunday Kinyarwanda service to EAf at 0530 to s/off 0559, (Saturday scheduled 0500-0600) a weak signal here. Runs // 15490 via Gavar, Armenia where the signal was slightly stronger.

15595 VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Liturgy in Russian on the 2nd Sunday of the month, beamed 40˚ to EEu at s/on 0930 to past 1020. A weak signal and // 17590 kHz also heard but almost just as weak. Also scheduled for Amharic at 113˚ to EAf on the 1st Sunday of the month, Armenian at 72˚ to CAs on the 3rd Sunday, Russain again on the 4th Sunday, and Arabic at 110˚ to EAf on the occasional 5th Sunday of the month (What are the chances of an Arabic speaker remembering to tune on on the 5th Sunday of the month? Now THAT’S faith!!). Because of the changing beam headings each week, if you don’t hear this service one week, then you may be able to snare it the next week!

17850 ROMANIA. RRI - Galbeni. Romanian to Iran from 0800 to 0900, a fair signal here. Also noted a weak signal on 15430 but I could not hear the 13630 or 11960 outlets at all.

17855 MARIANA IS. R. Free Asia - Tinian. Tibetan to EAs noted at 1015 to s/off 1100. Fair signal and no jamming.
