DX FOCUS:
ASIA AND THE PACIFIC
Summertime reception in Australia can often find improved signals from the Asia and Pacific regions. Over the last few days, I've successfully logged a good number of DX stations from these parts of the world.
3250 KOREA D.P.R. VoKorea - Pyongyang. Fade in around 0945 with the Japanese service, but doesn't get particularly strong until after 1100, Jan 28.
3320 KOREA D.P.R. Pyongyang BS - Pyongyang. F/in around 0955 with a weak signal for the Korean service. The signal improves later in the evening. Jan 28.
3365 PAPUA NEW GUINEA. R. Milne Bay - Alotau. Strong carrier by the audio was quite low at 1020, making listening rather difficult. These days, it seems that this station is regularly running with reduced audio, while the carrier is S8-9 on the dial! Jan 28.
3905 PAPUA NEW GUINEA. NBC New Ireland - Kavieng. Tok Pisin discussion program at 1026, fair to poor level but still good to hear it on an atmospherically quiet evening, Jan 28.
3925 JAPAN. R. Nikkei - Chiba. Music programming at 1028 with occasional Japanese anncts, adverts and IDs. A solid signal on Jan 28.
4755.5 MICRONESIA. PMA The Cross Radio - Pohnpei. "The Edge" religious program with talks and hymns at 1035. Fair signal and does well for its 1 kW. Jan 28. CLICK HERE to see information and a recording I made of this station in a previous blog post.
4870 INDONESIA. RRI - Wamena. Slow Indonesian pop songs and short anncts around 1043, poor signal at this time but improves a little later in the evening, Jan 28.
5985.85 MYANMAR. Myanmar Radio - Yegu. National program in Burmese with the 1130 "top of the hour" (for them!) news service. Later, a pop music program was the listening fare. A good signal on Jan 27.
3365 PAPUA NEW GUINEA. R. Milne Bay - Alotau. Strong carrier by the audio was quite low at 1020, making listening rather difficult. These days, it seems that this station is regularly running with reduced audio, while the carrier is S8-9 on the dial! Jan 28.
5985.85 MYANMAR. Myanmar Radio - Yegu. National program in Burmese with the 1130 "top of the hour" (for them!) news service. Later, a pop music program was the listening fare. A good signal on Jan 27.
6129.98 LAOS. Lao Nat R. - Vientiane. Long commentary or report at 1117 in Lao. Laotian song with a mighty fast (and impressive) instrumental break on a native stringed instrument at 1125. ID at 1130. Fair level with a little splash from CNR 1 on 6125. Is PBS Xizang still on 6130? I haven't heard them in the evenings for a long time. Jan 27.
7200.1 MYANMAR. Myanmar Radio - Yegu. Noted at 1105 with English song "Love You More Than I Can Say", then the sound of a telephone ringing, an ID and song annct, then into more easy listening pops. This service is in one of the minority languages, which has a more chopped and crisp style of pronunciation than the Burmese language (which always sounds softer, rounder and slightly more tonal to my ears). Compare the different styles by switching back and forth between this freq and 5985.85 kHz for the National Program in Burmese. The signal was stronger on this night than is often the case, even despite local thunderstorm atmospheric QRM. I retuned around 1140 and heard more pop music, then the station suddenly left the air unannounced at 1143! I hung around for about 10 minutes but the signal never returned. Jan 27.
7295 MALAYSIA. RTV Malaysia - Kajang. English news at 1105, then into light pops at 1110 in the TRAXX FM relay. This has a good signal but its always hard going at this time because of the two China stations booming and splashing away on 7290 kHz, Jan 28.
7520 THAILAND. R. Farda - Ban Dung. Pleasant soulful songs at 2130 in the Farsi service, a fair signal on Jan 31.
9545 SOLOMON ISLANDS. SIBS - Honiara. A very good signal at 1000 with the news in English and regular IDs. Should be audible for many other international DXers now that it's on this clear frequency with its 10 kW. Runs // 5019.9 but reception was not as good there on Jan 28.
9560 JAPAN. NHK - Yamata. Weak signal in Korean to EAs at 2210, Jan 31.
9635.78 VIETNAM. VoVietnam - Son Tay. Commentary program in Vietnamese at 2220, nice clear ID at 2226. Fair signal and only slight CNR jamming QRM on 9635 on Jan 31.
9960 PALAU. Khmer Post Radio - Medorn. Cambodian programming at 1220, a strong signal but with an equally strong penetrating high pitched jammer (similar sound to RTTY), Jan 27.
9835 MALAYSIA. RTV Malaysia - Kajang. The Sarawak FM service in Malay with music and chat at 1135. Good signal and only spoilt by some splash from CNR 1 0n 9830 kHz, Jan 28.
9840 VIETNAM. VoVietnam - Son Tay. S/on 1130 with the English service news to EAs, but only a fair signal. Runs // 12020 which was much better reception on Jan 28.
11905 SRI LANKA. Sri Lanka BC - Trincomalee. Music program with Hindi anncts at 0215, news at 0230 and monitored to past 0240. Poor signal (usually difficult to hear it on this band at this time), but pleased to catch it on Jan 29. No sign of Cairo which was scheduled to open at 0200.
13695 INDIA. AIR - Bengaluru. S/on 0215 in Kannada service to ME. IS, ID and news. A stand-out signal in the 22mb at this time. Jan 29.
15130 PHILIPPINES. VOA - Tinang. The SAs service in English on late, running past its usual 0200 s/off with the "State of the Union" address. Noted with a fair to poor signal past 0230 on Jan 29.
9835 MALAYSIA. RTV Malaysia - Kajang. The Sarawak FM service in Malay with music and chat at 1135. Good signal and only spoilt by some splash from CNR 1 0n 9830 kHz, Jan 28.
15190 GUAM. AWR via KSDA Agat. Ballad at 1152, closing anncts in Mandarin at 1155 then s/off music. At 1200, programming is in Cantonese and runs // 11825 (also from KSDA), with the later freq running around 1.5 seconds ahead of 15190 kHz. Fair to poor signal on Jan 27.
15420 PHILIPPINES. R. Free Sarawak - Palauig. Tuned in at 1056 to hear lovely ballads sung in English, but these ceased right on 1100 for the RFS theme music, ID and the start of their usual chat and commentary in Iban. Strong signal on Jan 27. Over the last 12 months, I have written about RFS a number of times in the MEDXR blog. You can read more about the station when you CLICK HERE and also CLICK HERE! Happy clicking…..! :-)
