TODAY ONLY ! - INTERNATIONAL MARCONI DAY EVENT

Image
SATURDAY APRIL 26, 2014 TODAY ONLY INTERNATIONAL MARCONI DAY EVENT This has just come to my attention and may be of interest to readers, for both amateur radio operators and  shortwave listeners. From the official website (http://g4usb.net/IMD/) , here are the basic details: WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL MARCONI DAY? International Marconi Day (IMD) is a 24-hour amateur radio event held annually to celebrate the birth of Guglielmo Marconi on the 25th April 1874. The IMD event is not a contest:  it is an opportunity for amateurs around the world to make point-to-point contact with historic Marconi sites using HF communications techniques similar to those used by Marconi, and to gain an attractive Award for achieving the requisite number of Marconi stations worked (see IMD Award ). IMD is  held on a Saturday close to Marconi’s birthday, when amateur radio stations are established, around the world, operating from locations celebrating the original historic  ...

QSLs FROM THE PAST - Part 1 - Comoro Islands

QSLs FROM THE PAST PART 1 INTRODUCTION Many of the MEDXR blog readers are interested in QSL cards, and some also enjoy viewing old cards and letters from years gone by. As you may know, I no longer maintain an interest in QSLs.....I'm not sure why! After having returned to the hobby (....again) over the past 18 months, I have sent out a handful of reception reports, received QSLs and then I've wondered to myself "Well now....what am I going to do with these??!!!" As the great Blues singer/guitarist B. B. King entitled one of his songs, "The Thrill is Gone!" It certainly was there once, and the fascination lasted for many years. I collected hundreds of QSLs from most countries around the world, and many were received from small, domestic broadcasters who no longer exist.  But those days have indeed passed for me. Now, my enjoyment comes from listening, monitoring, watching the movements of international broadcasters, logging the hard-to-hear smalle...

Image
A14 SCHEDULE CHANGES - PART 3 Here is the third and final part of new frequency and schedule changes for the start of the A14 season, as monitored here at Mount Evelyn. There are 63 observations here to add to the Part 1 and Part 2 blog posts previously published here. This is, by no means, a complete list of all possible schedule changes - simply the ones noted here at my location over the past two weeks. I hope you find these useful. 9455   AUSTRIA. AWR - Moosbrunn. S/on 0400 Turkish to ME. I could be wrong but this seems to be an additional service in Turkish (the other broadcast being at 1500 on 11935 which is also Moosbrunn). Currently, a poor signal but should improve with the coming winter months, Apr 17. 9535   CHINA. CRI - Xian. Japanese service at 2235, NF ex 5985, weak on Apr 15. 9570   THAILAND. VOA - Ban Dung. English to EAs at 2317, NF and weak on Apr 14. 9885   SAO TOME. VOA - Pinheira. Hausa to WAf on Sats only at 2055 to s/off 2...

Image
A14 SCHEDULE CHANGES - PART 2 60 additional schedule changes  to join the previous list posted here in the MEDXR blog last week. I hope you find these notes helpful in your listening endeavours. 7250   INDIA. AIR - Panaji. There appears to be a serious txer fault here with a loud high-pitched squealing tone accompanying the audio in their Malayalam service at 1735. Pity, as it was a lovely strong signal but listening was difficult through this noise. Apr 10. 7265   CHINA. CRI - Urumqi. English to ME at 1738, NF and appears to replace the Russian service previously scheduled at this time during B13, good signal Apr 10. 7350   IRAN. VOIRI - Kamalabad.
