"Morning Mist in the Wetlands" - Rob Wagner  STATION NEWS AND THE LOGBOOK AUGUST 24, 2014 I have been very busy with non-radio activities over the past two weeks. And I have some other music education projects that will be continuing through until the middle of September. So much for the "retired" man of leisure!! However, I wouldn't undertake these projects if I didn't enjoy them. So there won't be too many MEDXR blog posts over the next few weeks. STATION NEWS RUSSIA The DX world is a-buzz with news of the potential return of the Voice of Russia (....or is that Radio VR......or what???). Observant DXers have noted that there are a pile of frequency registrations appearing in the HFCC list for a scheduled start of October 1. Bob Padula in his World Shortwave Forum writes: "The Oct 1 A14 registrations were new, and published by ITU/HFCC on August 20, preparatory to the HFCC B14 conference in Sofia, which takes place on August 25. ...

RFE / RL - FASCINATING YOUTUBE VIDEO JUST RELEASED!

RADIO FREE EUROPE - RADIO LIBERTY FASCINATING YOUTUBE VIDEO JUST RELEASED! The US Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) held a long meeting on August 13. Video of part two of this meeting has just been released and featured a presentation on the current work undertaken by Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty. This type of presentation is what the BBG calls a "deep dive" (....jargon warning!!).   The presentation is really quite fascinating! It offers insights into the activities of RFE/RL journalists and staff. With many large conflicts currently being engaged around the globe, there are numerous issues that RFE/RL report on daily to radio listeners, television viewers and Internet surfers. They argue a strong case for their existence (and perhaps survival???) because of the urgent need for accurate information gathering and dissemination. The presentation gives a wonderful insight into the importance of this news network.  While a considerable amount of time is focus...

RADIO RESOURCES PAGE UPDATE

Image
RADIO RESOURCES PAGE UPDATE I've been doing some "housekeeping" with the MEDXR blog's Radio Resources Page, so you may want to check it out (top menu bar). Most of the original article files on this page were housed with another web host, but they no longer exist there. I have transferred them to the Box.com cloud where you can download at your leisure. Several posts that appeared in the blog some time ago but are still very relevant today have also been included in the Resources Page update. They are: A14 Summary of Some New Frequencies and Schedule Changes BOOK REVIEW: Good Morning Hanoi BOOK REVIEW: An Air War With Cuba You'll also find the links to the very popular antenna articles/reviews: The Double Bazooka Antenna - A YouTube Review The Tilted Terminated Folded Dipole - A Practical Construction Guide And finally, one of the most downloaded articles is: Latin American DX Survey 2013  More items will be added as this blog continue...

FAREWELL JULIAN, STATION NEWS AND THE LOGBOOK - August 9, 2014

FAREWELL JULIAN,  STATION NEWS AND THE LOGBOOK  AUGUST 9, 2014 FAREWELL JULIAN ANDERSON If you haven't already heard the news, well known Argentinian  DXer, Julian Anderson, passed away a few days ago. The report came through via a number of Facebook groups where Julian was a member. It was quite a shock to us all and apparently quite sudden. I don't know the circumstances surrounding his passing, but he will be greatly missed by the DXing community. I was always fascinated to read of Julian's early days as a DXer traveling around South America visiting many shortwave radio stations and relating his experiences along the way. He had a wonderful collection of radio memorabilia, along with interesting stories and photographs of the old days of radio from the South American continent. Only a few weeks ago, I invited Julian to contribute an article for my upcoming 2014 Latin American DX Survey. I believe it's important to have people like Julian recall...

"After The Falls" - Rob Wagner (Erskine Falls, Lorne VIC) STATION NEWS AND THE LOGBOOK AUGUST 2, 2014 Hi everyone and welcome to another MEDXR blog post.  Just on a personal note, I was invited by Ken Reitz KS4ZR, editor and publisher of The Spectrum Monitor , to contribute a column in the August issue just published. The magazine was released yesterday (August 1) and you can find my contribution in  The World of Shortwave Listening column and it's entitled The Australian SWL Perspective . If you don't subscribe to this magazine, you might want to think about taking a look at the website for more information. It's delivered by pdf and is a classy production. As its name implies, the magazine really does cover the whole radio spectrum from many different angles! You can also buy back issues at only US $3.00. Their website is: http://www.thespectrummonitor.com (I want to thank Thomas Witherspoon K4SWL for the introduction to Ken and TSM)   :-) ...

THE MIGHTY STATION OF K3LR

Image
THE MIGHTY STATION OF K3LR You have to check out the astonishing amateur radio station owned and operated by Tim Duffy, K3LR. Even if you have absolutely no interest in ham radio, you can't help but admire this impressive station. Recently, Fred Lloyd, AA7BQ was lucky enough to visit the 11 acre property with its huge antennas and amazing "radio shack".......and this is no shack!! Here's the links to Fred's article on QRZ Forums: http://forums.qrz.com/showthread.php?445092-Amateur-Radio-Superstation-K3LR After you have read the article, then take the drone flight over the antenna farm.  Also watch these two YouTube videos of the station in action.  In the first video, Tim Duffy walks you around the antennas and the radio room: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlXu7Q3h8RI The second video shows K3LR in action during a CW Contest.  http://youtu.be/jo2mCNJdvdk Although the two videos were made seven years ago, it appears that the basic setup of K3LR h...
