A MICRO DXPEDITION TO EAGLE'S NEST - July 22, 2022

Image
A MICRO DXPEDITION TO EAGLE'S NEST July 22, 2022 I have just returned from a winter afternoon's DXing at Eagle's Nest in the Silvan Forest. This is a great location for DXing because it has a very low noise floor, allowing for weak signals to peek through - even when there is no reading on the radio's signal strength meter! I took onboard the Tecsun PL680 receiver and a random length wire antenna about 30 metres in the trees at about 2.5 metres high. My listening stretched between 0200 and 0400 UTC (12 noon to 2 pm local time), and I noted many signals between 7 and 21 MHz. Below is a video of this little DX trip. 73 and good DX to you all, Rob Wagner VK3BVW Follow @robvk3bvw CLICK HERE for VK3BVW Live Stream (Clublog) QRZ callsign lookup: Search Callsign lookups provided by qrz.com © Rob Wagner, Mount Evelyn DX Report, and contributors 2012-2022

DX QUICK TIPS - July 16, 2022

Image
DX QUICK TIPS July 16, 2022 As I write this, the last few days have seen an elevated solar flux index between 169 and 171. The higher frequencies have come alive, even up to 21 MHz on the shortwave broadcast bands and right up to 28 MHz on the amateur bands. In addition, the lower frequencies (below 6 MHz) have been quite good at night. So, things are looking up on the propagation front! " About time ", I hear you say! 😄  Below is a selection of stations including Angola, Bolivia, Mexico, Peru, Tajikistan, Vanuatu, and more. ⭐⭐ 2310   AUSTRALIA. Shortwave Australia - Bendigo, VIC . A new station in AM, good signal at 0930 with a replay of an old show celebrating the Melbourne MW station 3KZ. July 12. See my recent post for more information about this station. ⭐⭐  2368.44   AUSTRALIA. R. Symban - Hurlston Park, NSW. 1905 Endless Greek music with no anncts, fair signal. Their website has been "parked", but the Facebook page appears active under the moniker "...

NEW STATION - SHORTWAVE AUSTRALIA

Image
NEW STATION SHORTWAVE AUSTRALIA Since July 7, I have been monitoring the new SHORTWAVE AUSTRALIA, a station operating on 4835 and 2310 kHz. My observations have covered periods between 0400 and 1200 UTC. A strong signal is being observed on both frequencies, but, of course, 2310 kHz is best heard at night. The station is located about 10km north of Bendigo, a regional city in Victoria. The licensee is David Stuart, and he writes: I have wanted to do something like this for a while, and I finally got hold of the old Alice Springs frequencies. It is a long story but won't bother you here with it, but they have gone through a couple of owners since they were discontinued by the ABC and by mutual agreement the ownership has passed on to me. David has recently moved to this location from Melbourne, onto a 60-acre farm with plenty of room for antennas and no neighbours to worry about. Using homebrew transmitters,  the output is 200 watts into dipoles. The dipoles for 4835 kHz are ea...

RADIO TAIWAN INTERNATIONAL - Transmitter Sites

Image
One of the 2021 series of brightly coloured QSLs from Radio Taiwan International (from the author’s collection) Radio Taiwan International Transmitter Sites (This post is an edited version of an article I wrote for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine - April 2022 issue. Further details on this excellent publication are available at www.thespectrummonitor.com ) Updated: Dec 23, 2024   Heightened tensions between China and the self-ruled democratic island of Taiwan have caused the global community to look critically at China's military expansion in the region. As a result, Radio Taiwan International continues to maintain an active presence on shortwave.  Photo courtesy James Wang Included in their schedule are broadcasts in Mandarin, Cantonese, Amoy, Vietnamese, Thai, Hakka, Korean, Indonesian, and Japanese. In addition, French and Russian programming can be heard via the Kostinbrod transmitters in Bulgaria. Also, there is a Sunday-onl...

TRY THESE TOUGH ASIAN DX CATCHES!

Image
TRY THESE TOUGH ASIAN DX CATCHES! Here are some shortwave broadcasts that will test the DXer's skills, patience and receiver/antenna setup! How many of these can you hear at your location? BANGLADESH. For several years, the Bangladesh Betar outlet at Shavar on 4750 kHz was plagued with horrible modulation that made broadcasts virtually unlistenable. However, the audio has been cleaned up in recent months, and the station is providing good listening again. Try the English service at 1230-1300 UTC and 1745-1900 UTC. On the same frequency is the Voice of Indonesia, which transmits in various languages between 1000 and 2230 UTC, including English at 1000, 1300 and 2100 UTC. So, you need to take care to identify the correct station! At my QTH, Bangladesh's higher power means that it is usually the stronger signal. INNER MONGOLIA. Fancy some real Chinese DX? Try these two low-powered stations in the 75 and 60-meter bands. Operating out of Hailar, Hulunbuir city in the Inner Mongoli...

THE BLOG IS BACK!

Image
THE BLOG IS BACK! Hi Folks, Thank you to those who have expressed concern about my absence from this blog for the past three months. Your messages and good wishes have been much appreciated. The truth is that it was time to take a break, attend to more important things, and put some perspective back into my life. • My health has been a bit wobbly recently, involving some ongoing medical issues.   • Family always comes first! We have had some important family interactions that required my full attention.   • I have been running the blog for nearly ten years without a break - it was time to take one now.   • Facebook is a beast that can sometimes be a minefield. For the sake of my sanity, I needed to give it a rest for a while!   • I learned that a well-known DXer in another part of the world was speaking about me in less than complimentary terms behind my back. This is a hobby for me - a hobby I enjoy and care about greatly. I have no time for people who spread lies a...
