STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK May 28, 2016 STATION NEWS PAPUA NEW GUINEA There have been some very good signals coming out of PNG over the past few days. It's great to hear that a few of these stations are still on the air, even after many have fallen by the wayside due to broken shortwave transmitters and movements to FM.  NBC - Madang was noted on 3260 kHz with songs and Tok Pisin anncts at 1028, interview program at 1032, fair to good reception.  On 3325 kHz, NBC - Bougainville had local news program at 1010 in Tok Pisin. The signal strength has been poor here recently, but on May 24 it was quite good on this evening despite the rather high atmospheric noise, and even improved to a very strong signal by 1115 UTC, with no sign of the co-channel Indonesian station. Also watch out for  NBC - Milne Bay (Alotau) on 3365 kHz. Once again this was monitored on May 24 with talks in Tok Pisin at 1017 and local PNG pops at 1021. Canned anncts in both English...

STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK May 23, 2016 There hasn't been much action on the Mount Evelyn DX Report blog recently. I have been struggling with ill health over the past three weeks. Results of tests later this week may shed some light on what's really wrong with me. As such there haven't been any real attempts to write any posts or turn on the radio. Even looking at the computer screen has been a struggle. However, over the past two days I've felt a little better, and have managed to do some listening. ETHIOPIA There are a few shortwave broadcasters operating out of Ethiopia these days, plus some that are beaming into the country from beyond its shores. Here's two stations that were noted this morning: 6090 kHz  Amhara State Radio - Addis Ababa. At 2005 UTC with its station ID in the Amharic language and a mix of music and talk, a very good signal. Careful listening and identification is needed as co-channel R. Nigeria-Kaduna is also often hear...

RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5000 RECEIVER - PART 3

Image
RESTORING THE KENWOOD R-5000 RECEIVER PART 3 The stock-standard AM filter supplied with the R-5000 was a pretty terrible device, resulting in poor selectivity and barely adequate audio in the wide setting. Well....perhaps I'm being a little too harsh! But really.....Kenwood could have done a lot better than this. And in fact they did, by selling an optional higher quality AM filter.....for more money! But the International Radio Corp has an even more desirable filter available, and that is the one I've chosen to install in this old radio. This short video goes through the process. Viewing at full screen HD is recommended. Missed Parts 1 and 2 of this series?
