DX QUICK TIPS - August 18, 2019

DX QUICK TIPS August 18, 2019 It has been a little while since I looked down on the "tropical bands" (as they used to be known) during my early mornings Two listening sessions between 1830 and 2100 UTC (4:30 and 7:00 am my local time) make up the list below. Some good catches in this lot: 2850   D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Pyongyang. Korean commentary at 2007, into a rousing choral number at 2010, fair to good signal, Aug 16. 3220   D.P.R.KOREA. PBS Pyongyang Pansong - Hamhung. Barely audible signal with Korean talk at 1950. Aug 16. ⭐ 3325   PAPUA NEW GUINEA. NBC -Bougainville. Early morning pop dance music, PNG style (well…..at least that’s what it sounded like!), perhaps designed to put a spring in the step of sleepy locals at 1954 with no ID or time check at 2000. Short Tok Pisin annct at 2005 then back into it again with dance-style pops. Fair signal, Aug 16. ⭐⭐ 4750   BANGLADESH. Bangladesh Betar - Shavar. Long talks in Bangla with occasional short music...

SHORTWAVE ACTION ON 12 MHz

Image
Graphic acknowledgement with thanks: Jamboree on the Air - Australia SHORTWAVE ACTION ON 12 MHz Over the years, I have noticed that some shortwave listeners tune just the lower parts of the 25-metre band, stopping just before they reach 12 MHz. I am not sure why this is so. But nevertheless, it is worth checking out the top end of the 25mb because there is plenty to hear up on 12 MHz. Here in Australia, we are still officially in the winter season. At nighttime, the bands above 14 MHz have been largely devoid of signals, especially as we are going through this extended period of the absolute sunspot cycle minimum. But for listeners in the northern hemisphere, I expect that monitoring of the 25, 22 and 19mb during your summer months would have yielded a few good catches on those bands. Soon, the reverse will happen - the northern hemisphere listeners will find the higher frequencies going quiet during your coming winter evenings, but those bands will open up somewhat for us ...

DX QUICK TIPS - August 3, 2019

DX QUICK TIPS August 3, 2019 With little to no sunspot activity going on at the moment, listening for stations above 14 MHz in the evening won't provide much joy. However, during the daytime, you will hear quite a few frequencies in operation, especially for those listeners enjoying the last of the northern hemisphere summer. And the lower frequencies (4-10 MHz) will continue to provide good and mostly reliable reception in the evenings. My friend and Asia DX expert, Ron Howard (Asilomar Beach, CA, USA) , continues to monitor the challenging broadcasts from east and southeast Asian nations. Here are three of his latest observations: ⭐⭐ KOREA SOUTH. 5920, Voice of Freedom, on July 29, with extremely rare day of no  N. Korea jamming; 1100+; variety of K-pop songs (Twice - "Dance The Night Away"  etc.) and announcers in Korean. Outstanding reception as usual when there is no  jamming!  My unedited audio of 1100-1110 at http://bit.ly/2K21lV9 (2:15 on my...
