The Double Bazooka Antenna - A YouTube Review

Image
The Double Bazooka Antenna - A YouTube Review Over the past six weeks, I have been experimenting with two new antennas: the 80 and 40 meter Double Bazookas. It's been a lot of fun trying out these and comparing them to my existing Par End Fed SWL antenna. AND....over the past three days, I have been compiling a video that introduces this antenna design, looks at its construction and documents its results. That has also been fun, as I have been endeavouring  to come to terms with Apple's iMovie software (I've only used it twice before - so I'm no expert here!!). The Double Bazooka is also known in some circles as a Coaxial Dipole, but it has some distinctive and important differences from the standard dipole antenna. It was originally designed for military use in the 1940's as a broadband antenna and from a transmitting point-of-view, this is one of it's main attractions - low SWR across almost an entire shortwave band. However, it also is successful in re...

Here are some notes on stations noted over the past week including Brazilian signals in both our mornings and afternoons, and some early fade in of stations as we approach the southern hemisphere winter DX season. Hope you find something of interest: 4755.5  MICRONESIA.  PMA The Cross Radio - Pohnpei. Preaching and hymns at 0735 f/in in our afternoon, the earliest I've heard them so far this year. Apr 24. 4925   KOREA REP.  MND Radio - Chuncheon. S/on 0954 with a song, into anncts 0958 and long talks. Noted with a fair signal while waiting in hope for a glimpse of Brazil on 4925.2…….Also noted the Brazilian het start up at 0959 at their scheduled s/on but no audio from them on this evening. Apr 23. 5039.2  PERU.  R. Libertad - Junin. First noted weakly at 0945 with songs and occasional anncts. Remained weak and variable for the rest of the evening. Apr 23. 6180   BRAZIL.  R. Nac. Here's another in the series "From the Logbook" with a few more new frequencies observed, plus some long-path Africans, Peru, Nigeria, and the ever-wandering Radio Free Sarawak. Hope you find something of interest here for you. 5995   MALI.  RTVMali - Bamako. French programming at f/in 0640 via the long path. Poor and variable signal, should improve as we get towards winter. Apr 17. 6095   SAO TOME.  VOA - Pinheira. Via long path in French at f/in 0616 until s/off 0630, fair signal. First time heard here, appears to be a NF probably ex 6020 and ex Botswana site. Apr 17. 6155   AUSTRIA.  ORF - Moosbrunn. German s/on 0500 and very strong at 0510, beaming to Eu, NAf, and ME. I believe this is the only SW transmission from Vienna, now that the AU/NZ transmission was abandoned at the end of the B12 period. And our winter season is probably the only opportunity to catch this station. Rare DX, indeed….who'd have thought?!! Apr 19. 6180   BRA...

Following on from the two recent posts relating to the A 13 Transmitting Season ( New Freqs - A13 Season  and  More Freakin' New Freqs ), here are some more frequency changes observed over recent days, including a series of changes for Radio Free Sarawak and Radio Pakistan. However, there's hasn't been much success on the low frequencies. Conditions between 3 and 5 mHz have been relatively poor with only average signal levels and high atmospheric noise. Hopefully things will improve in coming weeks as we approach the coming winter LF DX season. 6150   AUSTRALIA.  RA - Shepparton. NF for English 1045. Cuba's interval signal heard faintly in the background at 1056 but no threat to RA here! Apr 14. 7200.1   MYANMAR. Myanmar R. - Yegu. Bamar (Burmese) at 1245 with light local pops, a lovely signal until the strong CRI s/on at 1300 on 7205. It was // 7185.7 which was a weak signal and occasionally intermittent for a few seconds at a time. Victor 4S7VK repo...

Latest Domestic Band Survey Now Available

Image
One of the best research lists going around is the annual Domestic Broadcasting Survey (DBS), compiled by the Danish Shortwave Club International (DSWCI). The latest and 15th edition is now available for purchase at the DSWCI website:   http://www.dswci.org/dbs/ This unique publication contains three parts: Part 1: The 41th edition of the Tropical Bands Survey covering all ACTIVE broadcasting stations on 2300 - 5700 kHz, including clandestines. Part 2: Domestic stations on international shortwave bands above 5700 kHz broadcasting to a domestic audience. A13 schedules are included where available. Part 3: Deleted frequencies between 2 and 30 MHz which have not been reported heard during the past five years, but may reappear. The Domestic Band Survey is the ONLY publication that seriously looks at the tropical bands. The list is made up of actual monitored reports by DXers around the world.  For me, this is what makes the survey such an invaluable resour...

NEW FREQS.....NEW FREQS - A13 Season goes BANG!!!

Image
Well, its been a busy two days as I checked out the many frequency changes, transmitter changes, broadcast time changes, and even language changes for the A13 transmission season. I've made many notes and observations, and these are listed below. There are nearly 80 entries here.  We can expect some fluidity in the changes as stations who sign on with the HFCC jostle with those who haven't. And then there are those broadcasters who just do their own thing regardless of anyone else!! There are bound to be some adjustments to what I have presented below and I'll note these as they arise. Please feel free to add your own observations and comments to this list. If you hear something that you'd like to share, please do - either through the Facebook page or directly within this blog. I'm keen to hear from you! I hope you find some of this information of use. 9425   KOREA.  VoK - Kujang. Korean  to Europe 2000-2050, NF ex 9325. Good signal. 9435   ARMENIA....
