TWO VIDEOS: PERU 5025 KHZ & WWV ON 25 MHZ!

TWO VIDEOS Peru on 5025 kHz & WWV on 25 MHZ Here are two videos I recently posted on YouTube: 5025.02 kHz - PERU. R. Quillabamba - Cusco. I decided to check this out while the co-channel Cuban station, Radio Rebelde wasn't dominating the channel. Rebelde and most other Cuban outlets were off-air due to Hurricane Ian's extensive damage to transmitter sites. Sign on at 0957 with an orchestral opening, the full Radio Quillabamba station identification, mentioning FM, MW and SW freqs. Male and female announcers, many recorded announcements. This was a rare opportunity to hear the Peruvian station! Normally, it's nearly impossible to catch Quillabamba when Radio Rebelde is on-air. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Time and Frequency Division at Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, aside from all its other outlets on 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 MHz, also has an experimental station that operates when required for testing and observation purposes. This HF outlet i...

DX QUICK TIPS - October 16, 2022

Image
DX QUICK TIPS October 16, 2022 Firstly a few monitoring notes from our friend, Ron Howard, Asilomar Beach, CA, USA. Thanks, Ron! AUSTRALIA  4835 Shortwave Australia - Bendigo VIC. A quick check at 1115 & 1214 UT; very weak signal with EZL music. 5055, Radio 4KZ - Innisfail QLD , 1159 UT; still on the air well past their recently observed cut-off time of a few minutes past 1100. Is this the seasonal schedule change? Believe it went off the air just after 1200? Needs more monitoring. CHINA CNR 6 - On new 6010, 1203 UT. Thanks very much to Ralph Perry for the timely alert of this new development; // to the long-standing 6165 CNR6 frequency. Probably missed the sign-on at around 1200, as it was not on the air during earlier monitoring? Did not stay with this to find out if CNR11 is still here later? Needs more monitoring to determine the full CNR6 schedule for 6010. 7210, PBS Yunnan, 1047 UT; played their interval signal of Chinese songs; mixing with VCO1 (a numbers st...

SPOTLIGHT: THE VOICE OF JINLING - A lesser-known Chinese voice!

SPOTLIGHT: THE VOICE OF JINLING A lesser-known Chinese voice (This post is an edited version of an article I wrote for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine - August 2022 issue. Further details on this excellent publication are available at www.thespectrummonitor.com ) On 6200 kHz is a Chinese outlet not often reported in the pages of DX newsletters. Known as the Voice of Jinling, this broadcaster can often be heard in North America and other parts of the world, operating daily between 1228 and 1505 UTC. The station is located in Nanjing, the capital of the Jiangsu Province in eastern China, on the Yangtze River Delta, about 300 km (185 miles) up the Yangtze River from  Shanghai.  I visited Nanjing back in 1987 at a time when China was still emerging from its self-imposed isolation from the rest of the world. A subtropical climate means this inland city faces high humidity and fierce heat in the summer but somewhat milder winters than Beij...

SPOTLIGHT: TAJIKISTAN ON SHORTWAVE

SPOTLIGHT: TAJIKISTAN ON SHORTWAVE (This post is an edited version of a short article I wrote for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine - August 2022 issue. Further details on this excellent publication are available at www.thespectrummonitor.com ) Located in Central Asia is the land-locked country of Tajikistan. Surrounded by Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, it is the smallest country by area in Central Asia.  This predominantly mountainous nation possesses a rich tapestry of culture and history. Although regarded as constitutionally secular, it is estimated that 98% of the population practices the Islamic religion. The Tajik language is a form of Persian and is closely related to Dari. Many MEDXR blog readers will be familiar with the international shortwave relay transmissions from Tajikistan. These emanate from a transmitter site at Orzu, about 115 km (71 miles) south of Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s capital and largest city....
