VTVN RADIO VIETNAM - From 1973

Image
VTVN RADIO VIETNAM From 1973 I am trying to rescue some of my early DX recordings from the 1970s. Some tapes are deteriorating rather badly, so I am digitising the audio before I lose them forever! This is an archival recording of the opening of the Khmer service of VTVN Radio Vietnam, South Vietnam (known at the time as the Republic of Vietnam), recorded in February 1973. This recording features the old interval signal used in the 1960s and early 1970s, plus the Republic's national anthem, and opening station announcements. You can also see my VTVN QSL card and the envelope it came in. From memory, I may have been using a Lafayette HA230 receiver into a dipole antenna. 73 and good DX to you all, Rob Wagner VK3BVW   Subscribe!! DX QUICK TIPS - June 22, 2019

Image
DX QUICK TIPS June 22, 2019 FRANCE While cruising around the bands the other day, I noted R. France International - Issoundun on the new frequency of 11700 kHz. This is in French to East Africa at 0400-0500 UTC, NF (ex 9620). A weak signal sitting under the much stronger co-channel R. Habana, June 21. USA Further to my logging in last week's DX Quick Tips , WBCQ - Monticello ME was noted again yesterday. But where it was way off frequency last week at 9330.18 kHz, this time it was dead on 9330 kHz at 0430 UTC. Listened to a program featuring much waffle (and some dis-information...!) about problems with radio frequency interference. Because they got it on the exact frequency, surely this must be the new transmitter? But it doesn't sound like it is at full power yet! A fair to good signal at the time, which is OK considering the station is not aiming its carrier at Australia! June 21. TWO DAYTIME BANDSCANS Here in Down-under-land, we are smack bang in th...

YouTube Report - BBC ANTARCTIC MID-WINTER BROADCAST

While the broadcast arrives here just on sunrise, there is no actual rising of the sun in Antarctica resulting in 24 hours of darkness. So, the BBC broadcast which includes taped wishes and good cheer from the families of the base residents I am sure is very much appreciated by those scientists and researchers working down there. I suspect that reception of the broadcast was very good in Europe. But that's not the target area!! Shortwave propagation can be notoriously unreliable in Antarctica, so getting the signal down there is the real challenge! At least my location i...

DX QUICK TIPS June 15, 2019

Image
DX QUICK TIPS June 15, 2019 Well, the winter DX season has finally hit and some pleasing signals have made it into the radio shack. The higher frequencies are dismal at the moment, what with no ionisation from the sun during short winter days and the bottom of the solar cycle. But the lower frequencies between 4 and 7 mHz have been performing well, enabling stations not normally heard at any other time of the year to make their appearances. This coming week sees the winter solstice (June 21). In this edition of Quick Tips, I have included a few maps showing the tracks that signals take to Mount Evelyn during this time of year. Longer periods of darkness allow for those lower frequencies to become active earlier in the late afternoon/evening and hang on longer with the later sunrise and even into mid-morning. 4905   TIBET. Xizang PBS - Lhasa. Indigenous songs and telephone talk-back in Tibetan at 2135. Good signal and // 4920 and 6130 also heard, June 13. ⭐⭐ 4949...

DXING IN THE RAIN AT BLUE ROCK LAKE

DXING IN THE RAIN AT BLUE ROCK LAKE I discover a new DX location that has real signs of being a great place for winter daytime shortwave reception. The Tecsun PL680 portable receiver is with me again, along with a healthy length of antenna wire. But....there's just one problem! 73 and good DX to you all. Rob Wagner VK3BVW   Subscribe!!
