STATION NEWS March 25, 2015 VANUATU Just posted on the Radio Australia website is the wonderful news that all the Radio Vanuatu shortwave and mediumwave services are now back up and running, and at full power! Francis Herman, the ABC's program manager for the Pacific Media Assistance Scheme, says that Radio New Zealand's transmission engineer Steve White and local technicians have fixed Radio Vanuatu's short and medium wave service to a level better than before the cyclone. This means that radio broadcasts can be heard throughout the entire island archipelago.  You can check out the full full interview at the Radio Australia website through this link: http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/international/radio/program/pacific-beat/vanuatus-radio-station-signals-including-shortwave-restored/1429177 NEW A15 SCHEDULES The following broadcasters have finally got around to updating their websites with information of transmissions for the changeover th...

Book Review: VOICE OF AMERICA - A HISTORY

BOOK REVIEW:   VOICE OF AMERICA - A History by Alan L. Heil, Jr. Columbia University Press, New York, 2003.   538 Pages.   (This edited review was first published in the Electronic DX Press, 2003.  The book is still easily obtainable from Amazon and other booksellers.) Having been involved in SWL activities in one way another for over 45 years, I have often listened to the Voice of America during that period.  This giant of an international broadcaster certainly fills an important role for the United States Government through the communication of factual reporting and high journalistic reputation. In recent times, however, I've had the feeling that the good old VOA hasn't been quite as unbiased as it used to be.  Nothing like the right-wing conservative nonsense that FOX News puts out, mind you.  But still, I have detected a stronger US Government line than used to be the case. And so, it was with keen int...

STATION NEWS VANUATU Devastation exists across the most of the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. Only in the last 24 hours has communication been made with many of the outer islands. In some cases,  towns and villages have been totally wiped out, leaving the residents without housing, water, electricity and other essentials. An interview appeared on Radio Australia this afternoon that reports on the current situation with the mediumwave and shortwave antennas. This interview is conducted by Richard Ewart with Steve White, Radio New Zealand's transmission engineer who is currently visiting Port Vila under the  Pacific Media Assistance Scheme (PacMAS) . Steve brings listeners up to date with damage to Radio Vanuatu's shortwave and mediumwave facilities, and discusses the plan ...

STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK March 14, 2015 STATION NEWS SOLOMON ISLANDS Recently, there were several reports floating around that Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation was closing down on shortwave during 2015. These reports are NOT CORRECT! The station will be remaining on shortwave for some years to come. SIBC is hoping to have funds available soon to expand its FM network to cities and provincial towns. The shortwave service is being retained. In a few years time, they may add digital services using the current new shortwave transmitters. This information comes directly to me from a management source within SIBC. While talking about SIBC, Ron Howard at Asilomar Beach, CA, USA logged the station several days ago while it was operating on cyclone watch. Here's Ron's details: 5020.00, SIBC. Recently had been off frequency;  March 11 special extended schedule to provide tropical storm/cyclone info  in Solomon Pijin; with random listening from 1247 to ...

These are 17755 and 15490 kHz which now join the usual 9620 and 11940 kHz for the weekday broadcasts between 1900 to 2300, as well as the extended schedule on weekends between 1500 and 2300. The weekend schedules usually contain football coverage. All frequencies are well heard here at Mount Evelyn with 15490 being the strongest and 17755 kHz arriving here as the weakest signal. RWANDA It is reported that Deutsche Welle is closing down the Kigali transmitting site on March 28. It is expected that this will also affect the national broadcaster Radio Rwanda that uses these facilities for their 6055 kHz service between 0300 and 2100. The station's non directional 100 kW signal is strong here in Australia, especially in the 1800 to 2100 time slot. Check out the signal before its gone for good! Languages used include Kanyarwanda, ...
