NEW KIWI SDR IN FINLAND

Image
NEW KIWI SDR IN FINLAND Most MEDXR readers will be familiar with online remote radio and SDR facilities through KiwiSDR, WebSDR, GlobalTuners and the like. On the SDR.Hu website there is a huge array of online receivers spread across the globe. But here's a new one....and it's really very good! Jari OH6BG tells me that he has just opened up his new web-based KiwiSDR at Maalahti, Finland. The site is close to the sea at just 4 m ASL. The antenna system currently boasts a Hy-Gain AV-640 multiband (40M/30M/20M/17M/15M/12M/10M/6M) vertical right next to the sea, plus three stacked Hy-Gain TH7DX tribanders (20M/15M/10M) at a 42-meter-tall fully rotatable tower, plus a 10-dB low-noise-figure preamp by Clifton Laboratories. Jari writes: "Please note that this is a high-performance antenna system which means that, especially at local sunset, the kiwi will often produce spurious signals as the signals somewhere on the HF bands can exceed or be close to S9+60 dB! Currently,...

15 THINGS I’VE LEARNED ABOUT FT8

15 THINGS I’VE LEARNED
ABOUT FT8

It's been nearly one year since I started exploring the hugely popular weak signal digital mode known as FT8. About nine months ago on the MEDXR blog, I produced a short video detailing some background into the issues in setting up the communication protocol between the computer and the rig.

Later, I wrote a longer and more detailed post about a few of the technical specifications behind the FT8 software. I also spent some time explaining how FT8 and WSPR modes can be utilised by shortwave listeners who might be keen to explore something new. That article is called FT8, WSPR and the Shortwave Listener .

Then several months ago, I wrote another post called QSLs....Real Paper QSLs! displaying a selection of cards I had received resulting from contacts made on FT8.

And now, having made more than 1600 QSO during the year on FT8, I have prepared the little video below that reflects on a few of the things I've le...
