RETRO RECEIVER REVIEW #1 A Chance to Walk Down Memory Lane! I'm delighted to welcome friend and DXing colleague, Craig Seager, to the Mount Evelyn DX Report. For many years now, Craig has been the editor of the Shortwave Trail (the loggings section) and the Station News section of the Australian DX News (ADXN). Craig is one of Australia's finest DXers, a longtime listener with great experience in shortwave, mediumwave and other modes. His amateur radio callsign is VK2HBT. Craig also has another special interest - old radio receivers. Last October I was delighted to visit him and see his very fine collection. He has personally restored most of these fabulous radios to full working order. His knowledge of communications receivers is extensive.   I am so pleased that Craig has accepted my offer of sharing his knowledge with myself and our MEDXR readers. All of these Retro Receiver Reviews were published in the ADXN, the monthly bulletin of the Australian Radio DX Club. So...

STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK September 23, 2015 STATION NEWS VOA My thanks to Mauno Ritola for alerting me to this new information. Since last week's coup d'etat in the African nation of Burkina Faso, the Voice of America has stepped up its French services to Africa. During the weekdays I have observed the station from the following VOA relay sites: 9765 kHz  SAO TOMÉ. VOA - Pinheira. New 30 minute French service to Af from 2200. Much talk of the coup in Burkina Faso. A weak signal that eventually faded by 2215. Another weak signal was also noted on // 11850, also Pinheira. However, there was no propagation into Mount Evelyn from additional parallel freqs of 13670 and 15120 (both via Botswana). Interestingly, all four freqs were monitored via the Twente remote receiver in Europe, Sept 21. 9885 kHz  BOTSWANA. VOA - Moepeng Hill. A new extended service to Af noted from 0630 to past 0730 in French with a very good signal.  Scheduled s/off is now 0830. Appar...

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SPACE?

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SPACE? Hi Folks, I've been really busy working on various music projects over the past three weeks, and will continue to do so for at least another two weeks. So much for being a "retired gentleman"! But it's all been good fun! Therefore, all radio activities have been pushed into the background for the moment, including the MEDXR blog. In the meantime, I've been noting the high solar storm activities over the past week. Here in southern Australia, some of my photographic friends have been very busy taking shots of amazing auroral displays (known as Aurora Australis). Quite spectacular. Of course this has also been happening in the northern hemisphere, too. The results are that radio propagation has been very haphazard, especially on the higher frequencies. The latest video from Dr Tamatha Skov explains why: So what else is happening in space? Well, the International Space Station (ISS) continues to orbit the earth, and doin...
