VOACAP - SHORTWAVE PREDICTION TOOLS

Image
VOACAP SHORTWAVE PROPAGATION PREDICTION TOOLS VOACAP is a professional online high-frequency shortwave propagation prediction application. And it's one of the most useful do-it-yourself tools for amateur radio operators, DXers and shortwave listeners. Recently, there have been some layout changes to both the HFBC and amateur radio models of the app. In recent weeks, I have had some interesting email exchanges with Jari Perkiömäki, OH6BG, the VOACAP designer and administrator. Jari has done great work in redesigning both the HFBC and amateur radio websites of VOACAP. This YouTube review covers the benefits of this app and looks at the new layout. DX QUICK TIPS & OTHER NEWS - September 22, 2018

DX QUICK TIPS & OTHER NEWS September 22, 2018 Learned ladies and gentlemen of the DX fraternity!.....Rumours of the death of shortwave DXing have been greatly exaggerated! That is if the following news is any indication! 😉😀 INDONESIA The Radio Republik Indonesia's transmitter site at Ternate, in the Maluku Islands has been heard weakly in Japan by Hiroyuki Komatsubara on 3345 kHz. Try between 1000 and 1500 s/off. This station has been reactivated after a lengthy absence....but for how long?! Thanks to Hiroyuki. MALDIVE ISLANDS Here's one for the mediumwave DXers amongst us. Sarath Weerakoon in Sri Lanka advises that the Voice of the Maldives on 1449 kHz is currently off air and in the process of relocating its antennas from the eastern edge of Male to Thilafushi, about 7 km from the Maldivian capital. Initial reports were that the station was due back in operation by September 15, but there have been some delays and it is expected to take a few...

FT 8, WSPR AND THE SHORTWAVE LISTENER

Image
An eQSL received from Vlad UA6027SWL confirming my FT8 QSO with CT1AGS. Clearly, Vlad is a FIFA World Cup fan! FT8, WSPR and the Shortwave Listener (This post is an article I wrote for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine - August 2018 issue. Further details on this excellent publication are available at www.thespectrummonitor.com ) Well, it’s finally happened! It had to…eventually! I have been dragged kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century. I’ve joined the massive crowd of radio operators revelling in the joys of the new digital mode - FT8. And I love it! I have been on FT8 and WSPR modes nearly every day for the past three months making contacts around the world using low power, anywhere from 2 to 25 watts output. Being located in the lower southeastern part of Australia, well away from the highly concentrated ham populations of Europe, North America and Asia, has probably meant that my QSO rate is well down co...

DX QUICK TIPS - September 9, 2018

DX QUICK TIPS September 9, 2018 This weekend, my next door neighbours have been away on a brief holiday. Result: The noise on the shortwave bands was reduced significantly! YAY!!! It's amazing what one can hear when RF interference is absent. Plenty of weak signal DX was noted mostly during daylight hours, including frequencies normally heard during our mid-winter season here (May - July). So this weekend has been a pleasant DX surprise for me. May my dear neighbours take more holidays in the future!!! 😄 👍 4840   USA. WWCR - Nashville TN. Unusually early fade in for this time of year at 0555 (3:55pm here) with American preaching. Weak signal at first but improved quickly by 0625. Sept 8. 👍 5020   SOLOMON ISLANDS. SIBC - Honiara. Unusually early fade in for this time of year at 0625 (4:25 pm here) with music programming and chit-chat in English. Weak audio initially but improved later. Sept 8. 👍 5040   CUBA. R. Habana - Bauta. Fading in...

RETRO RECEIVER REVIEW #13 - The MARC NR-82 F1

Image
RETRO RECEIVER REVIEW #13 Click on each photo for an enlarged view MARC NR-82 F1 by Craig Seager VK2HBT This time we take a close look at a large format portable of yesteryear. With the benefit of 30 years of maturation, many of these sets are becoming collectable now and hark back to an era when a portable receiver didn’t exactly (or even approximately!) fit into one’s shirt pocket. In fact, the subject of this retro review #13, the Marc NR-82 F1, is the size of a benchtop television. Standard Radio Corporation was founded in Japan in the Mid 1950s, and initially made its mark selling portable radios. Later it branched into tape recorders and other audio equipment, bringing it to the attention of a U.S. company called Superscope, which had acquired the prestigious Hi-Fi manufacturer Marantz in the early 1960s.    Superscope recapitalised SRC, which then began Japanese manufacturing of Marantz components, eventually becoming Marantz Japan in 1975. For...
