BUSY DXPEDITIONS IN THE PACIFIC ISLANDS

A35JT Expedition to Tonga BUSY DXPEDITIONS  IN THE PACIFIC ISLANDS Amateur radio operators and shortwave listeners have been enjoying a big uptick in DXpeditions across the southern Pacific Ocean in recent weeks and this activity looks set to continue across the next few weeks. The activation of so many islands has created some wonderful opportunities for DXers to hear and work some new countries and remote islands on shortwave. Let's have a look at what's on offer: Tonga - A35JT As I write this post, A35JT is currently very busy making thousands of contacts on SSB, CW, RTTY and FT8 on all bands from 160 through to 6m, including some successful Moonbounce on 6m! The team blog reports: It has been a busy 3 days here in Tonga and we now have over 3000 contacts in the log. The station build has taken longer than anticipated. However, we finally have the three stations operational since Wednesday night local time. We will be stepping up our efforts to target Eu...

DX QUICK TIPS - September 20, 2019

DX QUICK TIPS September 20, 2019 The September (Vernal) Equinox for the Southern Hemisphere will take place on September 23. This is one of two times in the year when there are roughly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. In the Northern Hemisphere, the September equinox is called the Autumnal or Fall Equinox. The Sun shines directly over the equator. It is during these times of the year when we often find that propagation can change and improve to certain areas of the world.  Let me give you an example from the past. Here in southeastern Australia, for decades we were able to monitor improved signals from Brazilian domestic broadcasters nearing the equinoxes (March and September). At these times, using a path over the Antarctic, there is just enough daylight and darkness over the South Pole to allow shortwave signals to propagate between South Eastern Australia and eastern South America. Brazilian stations could often be heard at their best during these time...

A VISIT TO RADIO TELEVISYEN MALAYSIA - KAJANG

A Visit to  Radio Televisyen Malaysia - Kajang by Timm Breyel (Guest Contributor) Timm Breyel is one of the most experienced DXers in Asia, and is based in Malaysia. My thanks to Timm for generously allowing me to reproduce the following article and images from his recent visit to the transmitter site of Radio Televisyen Malaysia at Kajang. Timm's visit reveals that changes have been underway and perhaps NOT for the better.  - Rob * * * * * * For many short-wave listeners around the world, the Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) transmitter site in Kajang is the de facto "Voice of Malaysia." For much of this decade RTM stations Asyik FM, Sarawak FM, Wai FM, Radio Tawau - Limbang FM, TRAXX FM, Klasik Nasional and Voice of Malaysia have had simulcast short-wave transmissions originate from this sprawling facility. Of these stations, only Wai FM (on 11.665 kHz) continues to be heard from Kajang. Insomuch as Malaysian short-wave transmissions have decreased sign...
