DX QUICK TIPS - FLINDERS RANGES DXPEDITION - July 27, 2018

DX QUICK TIPS FLINDERS RANGES DXPEDITION July 27, 2018 My wife and I have been travelling through the Flinders Ranges, the largest mountain range in South Australia. Dramatic rocky outcrops, deep gorges, and rugged wilderness are the features of this astonishing countryside. Around the ranges, the land is flat, which creates an even more striking visual impact for this striking semi-arid landscape. It is also where our DX Quick Tips comes from this time around. In this part of Australia, the distances between towns are quite large. Manmade noise levels are very low. So, it has been interesting to observe reception differences between the ranges and my home at Mount Evelyn. Equipment on this trip was very basic: Tecsun PL680 receiver and a 46 m (150 feet) long wire antenna in an inverted vee shape (thanks to a big old gum tree). A three-shot panorama of a small part of the Flinders Ranges (Click on all these images to view them in an enlarged format). ...

RADIO HISTORY WEBSITE - An Important Archival Service

RADIO HISTORY WEBSITE An Important Archival Service Some wonderful archival resources can be found at the American Radio History website. Many of these will be of great interest to shortwave listeners and DXers alike, especially for those of us who can remember the "heydays" of DXing. And it's not just American magazines and books that reside in this online library! Here are just a few of the resources to be found: Monitoring Times This well-known magazine had very humble beginnings with their first issue in January 1982. The entire early collection right up until December 1999 can be found here. Checking out the old advertisements for receivers and auxiliary equipment makes fascinating reading for those of us who remember that gear. https://www.americanradiohistory.com/Monitoring-Times.htm SPEEDX The Society to Preserve the Engrossing Enjoyment of DXing or SPEEDX club was founded in 1971 by former officers and members of the American Shortwave List...

BROADCASTING INTO THE PACIFIC - Highly Recommended!

Image
BROADCASTING INTO THE PACIFIC ABC Saturday Extra Program This morning, there was an excellent series of interviews on the ABC's Saturday Extra show. It discussed the ABC's decision to close Radio Australia's shortwave service - the impacts and implications that decision has had on Pacific island nations. "The Federal Government is currently undertaking a review of Australian broadcasting services in the Asia-Pacific region. There’s a lot at stake, especially since the ABC let go of its shortwave radio service, in January last year. The Chinese are now instead providing some of that shortwave radio, and there are fears more generally about reduced access to independent information in the Pacific." - ABC website If you have 30 minutes to spare, I think you will find this discussion quite informative. Certainly, the disgraceful closure of Radio Australia on shortwave has been felt throughout the Pacific. In the old days, RA could be relied upon to o...

DX QUICK TIPS July 12, 2018 RON HOWARD (Guest Contributor) My friend in California, Ron Howard, always keeps me up to date with his listening adventures. Ron is active on the shortwave bands almost daily, and I receive email updates of his DX observations several times a week. From his listening post at Asilomar State Beach, CA here is a summary of what Ron has noted on the bands this past week, plus some links to his audio recordings: AUSTRALIA .  5055, 4KZ. Recently had been hearing a 1151* cut off time and speculated was on a timer. July 9, at 1118-1150* (very close to 1151); playing  Bobby Darin - "Dream Lover,"  Crowded House - "Don't Dream It's Over," etc. On July 10, was close to 1150:43* and on July 11, off close to 1150:35*, so yes definitely closing down via a timer. At the end of June, Ron noted :   5055, 4KZ, 1204+, on June 26, noted off the air. June 27 back on the air again. Off the air again 1213+, on June 29. Sent ...
