TOMORROW ONLY!!    BBC WINTER SOLSTICE SPECIAL BROADCAST The annual BBC Winter Solstice Broadcast to the British Antarctic Survey team  is occurring tomorrow,  June 21 at 2130 to 2200 UTC . It's always such a lovely broadcast, the way shortwave radio used to be!! - a very personal approach to broadcasting. If you get the opportunity to check out this once-a-year transmission, do so! The following frequencies will be operating: 7350 kHz via the Ascension transmitter, 250 kw, beaming 207 degrees 5875 kHz via the Woofferton transmitter, 250 kw, beaming 184 degrees 5985 kHz via the Dhabayya transmitter, 500 kw, beaming 203 degrees A previously advertised frequency of 9890 via Woofferton appears to have been dropped from the schedule. LOGBOOK: HOT AFRICAN AND LATIN AMERICAN DX

Image
LOGBOOK:   HOT AFRICAN AND LATIN AMERICAN DX!! Considering that propagation conditions have been quite variable in the past few days,  it's been pleasing to see that the winter DX has continued at Mount Evelyn. Earlier in the week, solar flux numbers reached 175 at its highest point but is now tracking around the 111 mark. So we've had impressive signals coming through on the higher frequencies on one day, but some poor signal propagation on other days. There have also been a few solar storms thrown in for good measure! However, it pays to keep trying, even in poor conditions, because often some surprise signals can make it through to the receiver! This post continues on from the one posted about a week ago, entitled Plenty of South American DX . 3310   BOLIVIA. R. Mosoj Chaski - Cochabamba. Briefly heard at 0915 with lively music and talk at quite a reasonable level through the noise, but faded and quickly disappeared by 0925, June 10. And again on June 1...

RADIO MADAGASIKARA - 6135 kHz Surprise Weekend Reception!

Image
RADIO MADAGASIKARA - 6135 kHz Surprise Weekend Reception! Some lovely reception of Radio Madagasikara on this not-often-heard frequency of 6135 kHz here at Mount Evelyn. Here's the logbook entry and some audio clips of the transmission: 6135   MADAGASCAR. R. Madagasikara - Ambohidrano. Short "Radio Madagasikara" ID between a delightful music program of East Afro pop songs at 2135. Co-channel QRM from CRI's Croatian service between 2110 and 2130, then Madagasikara became the dominant station on the freq. A very solid signal, with a late weekend schedule on June 14. Running parallel with the usual 5010.29 kHz also heard, but the 60mb outlet was weaker by that time of the morning. 6135 kHz appears to be a far more stable frequency, too.  AUDIO CLIP #1 AUDIO CLIP #2 AUDIO CLIP #3 73 and good DX to you all. LOGBOOK: PLENTY OF SOUTH AMERICAN DX!

Image
Radio Verdes Florestas - Cruzeiro do Sul LOGBOOK: PLENTY OF SOUTH AMERICAN DX! In southeastern Australia, wintertime has just arrived….along with some great DX! It was especially good to see some early morning Brazilian DX  in the 60 and 49 metre bands, with signals travelling south of Brazil, across the Antarctic and up into Mount Evelyn. Here's some listening observations from the past few days: 3310   BOLIVIA. R. Mosoj Chaski - Cochabamba. Briefly heard at 0915 with lively music and talk at quite a reasonable level through the noise, but faded and quickly disappeared by 0925, June 10. 4774.91   PERU. R. Tarma - Tarma, Junín. Noted around 1035 with chat and occasional songs, not strong and should improve over the next few weeks, June 11. 4865   BRAZIL. R. Verdes Florestas - Cruzeiro do Sul. I had the radio on in the background, sitting on this empty freq while I worked on the computer. Then over about five minutes around 1045, this station fa...

OBSERVATIONS: INTERNATIONAL RADIO FOR DISASTER RELIEF

Image
OBSERVATIONS: INTERNATIONAL RADIO  FOR DISASTER RELIEF This week's special tests in International Radio for Disaster Relief (IRDR) conducted by the HFCC proved to be an interesting exercise, at least from a shortwave listener's perspective! As observed here at Mount Evelyn, the exercise appeared to have mixed results.  Focused on the Jakarta Media Summit, the trial was designed to demonstrate the potential usefulness of high-powered shortwave broadcasting in disaster relief. Here's how the HFCC describes the motivation behind the IRDR tests: The International Radio for Disaster Relief project is capable of becoming a permanent part of global shortwave coordination that is already in existence. The system is automated: It checks on any changes or additions in the database every ten minutes. If any changes are detected, the processing starts automatically, the global database is updated and any possible incompatibilities or "collisions" identified...
