Religious Broadcasters and others!

Image
Religious broadcasters dominated the logbook over the last few days! 3185   USA.  WWRB - Morrison, TN. A very weak signal at 0800 when there was an ID (of sorts) and the usual preaching. Came back to it 15 min later and found it was smothered by TVI. Rarely heard here, Sept 26. 3215   USA.  WWCR - Nashville, TN.  A fair to poor signal but somewhat stronger than 3185 with preaching at 0810, Sept 26. 3925   JAPAN.  R. Nikkei 1 - Nemuro. Poor signal at 0815, with programming // to 6055. Usually picks up by around 0930, Sept 26. 5085   USA.  WTWW - Lebanon, TN.  I don't usually tune up this far on the 60mb, so I haven't heard this one for a long time. Now I remember why I don't come here more often!! Usual stuff at 0750 with a strong signal and some technical non-wizardry (rubbishy audio, music stopped mid-song, poor content delivery, etc), Sept 26. 5995   MALI.  RTV du Mali - Bamako. Always seems to have low audio...

Brazilians Appear for September Equinox

Image
Around the time of the September Equinox (Sept 23), signals from the lower-powered high frequency Brazilian stations appear on a semi-regular basis and improve considerably. A great time to listen is during my local afternoons, say 2.30 to 5.30pm (0430-0730 UTC). This afternoon, the following stations were noted: 9565.1   BRAZIL.  Super R. Deus é Amor - Curitiba . Not a strong signal but quite readable at 0707 with vigorous preaching and a brief ID 0709, running // 11764.81, Sept 27. 9645.4   BRAZIL.  R. Bandeirantes - São Paulo. Portuguese talk (possibly news) at 0504, but local noise on this band at this time made listening difficult. Came back at 0705 and still weak but much clearer. Seems to be getting further away from nominal 9645, up another 100Hz on when I last heard them earlier in the year, Sept 27. 9665.7   BRAZIL.  Voz Missionária - Camboriú.   Couldn't hear this one earlier in the afternoon (around 0500) when the other...

PNG, Latins, Nigeria and more....

Image
Loggings from last weekend included the following:...... PAPUA NEW GUINEA STATIONS audible on Sept 22 between 1055 and 1130 UTC: 3260   NBC Madang 3325   NBC Bougainville 3365   NBC Milne Bay 3385   NBC Rabaul They all carry their own programs - usually in Tok Pisin with occasional English and mainly a mix of island music, pops, C&W, and Sunday evening chat. However, nothing heard on 3205 kHz. Long gone are the days when the 90metre band was full of PNG stations. NOTE:  There is a report (from the South East Asia DXing Blog) that Madang may be moving their transmitter to a higher location on Mt Nobonob this month. It may be worth monitoring their 3260 kHz outlet to see if there is any improvement in reception. The station is seeking reports. 3330   CANADA.  CHU - Ottawa. Nice signal over the noise on Sept 22 at 1100. You can learn more about this interesting time signal station, its operations and its hi...

A Visit to the Woofferton Transmitting Site

Image
Hot on the heels of the recently released video tour of the now-decommissioned VOA - Bethany transmitting site (see blog here ), there's a new transmitter tour now available on YouTube.  The Woofferton site in England is put under the microscope by Senior Engineer, Dave Porter G4OYX. As you are aware, this site is still very much in operation on a daily basis, so it's interesting to see inside (and up close) a working transmitter operation. And, Dave "fires up" one of the 250 kW units specially for this video! The tour is technical in nature, and will be of interest to DXers and SWLs, as well as regular amateur (ham) radio operators. When I watched it on YouTube this morning, I noticed that there hadn't been many "views" as yet. So, hopefully as the word gets around, more people will take the time to check this out. Being a musician, I was tickled to hear that some of the large coils used inn the transmitters were, in fact, manufactured by th...

KVOH Test, Open Radio Nth Korea, R. Dabanga.......

Image
Listening conditions here at Mount Evelyn have been quite good over the past week. A mixed bag of different stations have been logged, including KVOH's brief test transmissions. I've sent an emailed reception report off to them straight after the broadcast, but nothing heard back as yet. 6090   IRAN.  VOIRI - Sirjan. Moderate level over CNR 2- Geermu at 2120 for the Albanian service, music then ID and address at 2126, piano music then anthem, with eventual s/off 2131, Sept 14. 7460   MONGOLIA.  RFA - Ulaanbaatar. Nice signal in the clear at 2140 for the Korean service. I don't often hear RFA un-jammed these days, Sept 14. 7480   TAJIKISTAN.  Open R. Nth Korea - Dushanbe. Aimed towards Nth Korea and NE China (bordering with Nth Korea), a weak signal at 2145 with long talks, until s/off at 2159 on Sept 14. 7495   FRANCE.  R. Algerienne - Issoudun. French news at 2201 then into an Arabic music program at 2208, fair level on Sept 14. ...

LATIN AMERICAN DX SURVEY 2013 Available for Download I have compiled a new survey of Latin American broadcasters, as monitored here at Mount Evelyn, Vic, Australia. It covers mainly domestic but also some international stations over the period between March and August this year. Also included are some tips on QSLing the Latins.
