NEW RADIOS, NEW STATIONS, NEW SOLAR CYCLE - Part 2

Image
Small M-Class flare at 0403 UTC on December 28 NEW RADIOS, NEW STATIONS, NEW SOLAR CYCLE Part 2 (This post is an edited version of an article I wrote for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine - December 2021 issue. Further details on this excellent publication are available at www.thespectrummonitor.com )   Missed Part 1 of this extended blog post on recent new radios?   👉   CLICK HERE   👈 New Stations Over the last two decades, we have become acclimatized to watching many international and small domestic broadcasters disappear from the shortwave dials, never to return. The exodus began in the 1990s and reached an accelerated pace by the early 2000s.  Today, the shortwave broadcast bands are just a shadow of their former crowded activity. So, it is always heartening to hear of a new station on the bands. No, these are not like the old international broadcasters with large programming departments offering multiple lan...

NEW STATION ON SHORTWAVE - MIZZIMA RADIO

Image
NEW STATION ON SHORTWAVE MIZZIMA RADIO A new clandestine station began broadcasts on shortwave around January 1. The station is called Mizzima Radio and is on the air on a daily basis via the Encompass DM transmitter at Dhabayya, United Arab Emirates. Here is my logbook note from yesterday, January 11: 17730   U.A.E. Mizzima Radio - Dhabayya. S/on 1159 with introductory music, a clear ID and welcoming anncts in Burmese at 1200, news at 1202. Music at 1216 to introduce a commentary program. Good signal except for some slight carrier hum, Jan 11. However, the organisation behind Mizzima Radio is not new!   It has been in existence since 1998, founded by veteran journalists of Myanmar's 1988 pro-democracy uprising. It has separate websites in Burmese and English, a free-to-air TV channel, a YouTube channel, satellite broadcasting, smartphone apps, social media presence, and a publications unit. I find it fascinating that an organisation boasting multi-media platforms shoul...

NEW RADIOS, NEW STATIONS, NEW SOLAR CYCLE Part 1 (This post is an edited version of an article I wrote for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine - December 2021 issue. Further details on this excellent publication are available at www.thespectrummonitor.com )   We live in exciting times! Who said shortwave listening was dead? There seems to be plenty to capture our attention. And the opportunity to share experiences, learnings and news has never been greater. So, let’s reflect on three crucial aspects that can give us cause for optimism - new gear, new broadcasters and a significant uptick in propagation. In Part 1 of this extended blog posting, we will look at some of the recent additions to the receiver market. New Radios Many receivers have made their way onto the market during the past two years. Advancing technologies with new chips and circuit designs have resulted in the return of the shortwave bands to the latest portable radios,...

DX QUICK TIPS January 1, 2022 AND WE ARE AWAY!......... My first blog post for 2022. I wish you all a very Happy New Year. The past couple of years have been tough, but we can always look to brighter days ahead. Here are some DX tips noted in the last few days and hours of 2021. It has been great to see the solar flux index (SFI) on the rose over the past week. So, here at Mount Evelyn (SE Australia) we have witnessed improved reception of the few broadcasters using the 13mb (see 21470, 21580 and 21670 kHz). We could see greater use of this band in the next year or so. MAIN RECEIVER: Yaesu FTDX3000 ANTENNAS: 100m long horizontal loop, 30m full-wave vertical delta loop, 14 MHz dipole 👍👍 2349.4   D.P.R.KOREA. KCBS - Sariwon. Being regularly heard now, so its return to the frequency appears permanent. F/in around 1230 with a weak signal. Female choir in an orchestral setting. Runs // 3250 (via Pyongyang) where it is considerably stronger. Dec 29. 👍  4750   BANGLAD...
