STATION NEWS AND DX QUICK TIPS - March 26, 2025

Image
STATION NEWS AND DX QUICK TIPS March 26, 2025 Much had happened in the world of shortwave over the past few weeks. The suspension of Voice of America broadcasts is one thing. It also includes VoA Deewa Radio, VoA Studio 7, and VoA Radio Ashna. But some have forgotten that the move by the current U.S. federal government has also impacted Radio Free Asia, Radio Thailand, Radyo Pilipinas, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (inc. Radio Ashna, Radio Mashaal, Radio Farda), and Radio Martí.   A few of the non-VoA broadcasters above continue to operate on severely restricted schedules via non-VoA-owned transmitter sites (e.g. Vatican's SM Galeria facility). But there is no doubt that the directive has left gaping holes in the shortwave broadcast bands.  To be clear, VoA hasn't been dismantled completely....yet!. Broadcasts have been suspended. The VoA website has stopped publishing news after March 15. There is every possibility that some services may resume, albeit in a significa...

SPOTLIGHT: SICHUAN ETHNIC RADIO

Image
Twin towers, Chengdu. SPOTLIGHT: SICHUAN ETHNIC RADIO One of the more obscure Chinese broadcasters on shortwave is Sichuan Ethnic Radio, a division of Sichuan Radio and Television (SRT).  Tracing SRT's history is a venture for only the brave-hearted. In classic Communist-style, Sichuan province’s broadcasting policies and developments present many convoluted twists and turns. SRT was established by merging the former Sichuan People's Radio Station, Sichuan Television Station, Sichuan Radio and Television Group, and other entities. Today, SRT is a large organisation that includes AM and FM stations as well as about nine TV channels. Additionally, there are two shortwave frequencies for the Ethnic Radio service—6060 and 7225 kHz. The station operates from the heart of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in southwestern China. It is one of the major cities in the country and serves as a political, economic, and cultural centre for the region. Chengdu is situated in the Sic...

READERS RESPOND TO MY QSL CHEATERS POST

Image
READERS RESPOND TO MY QSL CHEATERS POST My blog post from February 15, “QSL CHEATING - A BLIGHT ON THE SWL HOBBY,” received a massive response from regular Mount Evelyn DX Report readers. Thanks to everyone who provided feedback, thoughts, and comments on the MEDXR blog and Facebook, as well as the many Facebook 'Likes.” If you haven't read the original article, the following will make much more sense if you refer back to that post (link above). BUT… before I dive into some of the responses….. The Sad Case of the Internet QSL A few weeks ago, in one of the Facebook SWL groups, an example of precisely the kind of QSLing I was discussing popped up for everyone to see! I couldn’t believe the timing of the listener’s post! Impeccable! The listener (identity protected) submitted his “reception” report to a small station (identity protected) in his country. The broadcaster operates on shortwave and mediumwave and offers on-demand Internet streaming. The station promptly replied ...
