STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK - November 27, 2015

STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK November 27, 2015 STATION NEWS UNIDENTIFIED Here is something unusual that has only appeared in the last two days. It's an unidentified station operating on both 4900 and 6215 kHz. Both these frequencies are well known for the Korean numbers station called V24. However, this station has been inactive in recent times. But on November 25, I noted 6215 kHz with some pop music on a loop around 2000 UTC. Later on Nov 26, I checked again and both frequencies were in action running the same looped pop song in parallel. The song is called "Into the New World" by a group of South Korean singers called Girls Generation, and was a hit for them back in 2007. These transmissions have also been independently heard by Sei-ichi Hasegawa in Japan, Antonello Napolitano in Italy, and Mauno Ritola in Finland. Indeed, Mauno reports that he has also heard the clandestine Echo of Hope programs running in parallel with other known EOH frequencies! The tr...

STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK November 20, 2015
 FROM THE LOG BOOK
3185   USA. WWRB - Morrison TN. Heavy American preaching at 1030, poor signal.
3289.98   UNIDENTIFIED. Definitely a carrier with occasional wisps of music and talk at 0935. Gone by 0947. Believed to be Guyana. Has short path greyline propagation characteristics of Guyana (sunrise 5:42am in Georgetown, sunset here around 8:30pm AEDT). Wasn't expecting anything to show up this late in the season and with summer almost upon us. AND with reception noted from home, not stuck in some God-forsaken forest out in the middle of nowhere (which was where I heard it from last time !!).
4055   GUATEMALA. Radio Verdad - Chiquimula. Uptempo hymns at 1020 with no anncts. Not a bad signal on the big 80mb double bazooka antenna, considering the heavy thunderstorm static.
4774.9   PERU. R. Tarma - Tarma. Music programming 1010, ID and TC, highly electrified music, twangy and very artificial s...

WEAK SIGNAL DX - WHEN THE NOISE GOES AWAY

Image
WEAK SIGNAL DX .....WHEN THE NOISE GOES AWAY Several days ago (Friday the 13th, no less!), everyone in our neighbourhood were notified that the electricity would be turned off off for a few hours to enable power line maintenance. I found that I was going to be home during the outage. GREAT!....I thought. Time to get out the 12v sealed lead acid battery, charge it up, bring it into the radio shack and connect up to the Yaesu FTDX3000 transceiver. So when they finally turned off the power (for 2.5 hours as it turned out), I was seated at the radio READY FOR ACTION!!!! Here's a summary of what happened during those hours, along with some YouTube observations. Man-made noise levels can vary from day-to-day, especially during daylight hours. A few years ago, at my previous home QTH, local electrical noise was S9 for much of the time and effectively destroyed my shortwave listening hobby. Here at Mount Evelyn, being a semi-rural location, it's a lot quieter especially in...

RETRO RECEIVER #3 - SCHAUB LORENZ ITT TOURING T104A

RETRO RECEIVER REVIEW # 3 (Click on each photo for a closer view) SCHAUB LORENZ ITT TOURING T104A by Craig Seager VK2HBT The overtly Teutonic sounding brand name of Schaub-Lorenz can trace its heritage back to the 19th century when C. Lorenz AG became engaged with the manufacture of rudimentary electrical devices in Berlin, including lighting and telegraph equipment. Military communications applications followed during the First World War, and again in the 1940s, the German military was to anoint the company as a key supplier,  it by then having absorbed the manufacturer G.Schaub Apparatebau-Gesellschaft. Until the merger, both the Lorenz and Schaub companies independently had been involved with manufacturer of radio receivers since the technology’s infancy in the 1920s. Around 1930, the German holding company of America’s International Telephone and Telegraph (IT&T) acquired stock; the conglomerate having itself having grown its European divisions considerably...
