DX QUICK TIPS January 20, 2018 As the "wedding of the year" draws ever closer, the father of the bride is working hard on his speech....which then has to be translated for our Japanese guests. But still, I have managed to fit in some DX listening, especially with some pleasing long path propagation in my late afternoon. ⭐⭐ 5025    CUBA. R. Rebelde - Bauta. Early f/in at 0715 with a talk program. The signal remained weak until around 0845 when it started to pick up. Unusual for me to hear it this early in the late afternoon in high summer. Atmospheric and local noise were extremely low on this day, which helped considerably! Jan 19. ⭐⭐ 5915   ZAMBIA. Zambia NBC - Lusaka . Back on air after a long absence, noted at 2035 with a discussion program in a local native language. Intriguingly, there were short bursts of singing, as though they were discussing songwriting or telling stories through song. Nice Zambian song at 2100. Some talkback radio calls taken ...

HEY BUDDY!.....WANNA BUY A CHEAP WRTH?

HEY BUDDY!.....WANNA BUY A CHEAP WRTH? We all know that the World Radio TV Handbook is an invaluable resource for radio hobbyists. I make sure I pick up a copy every year. The latest edition - Volume 72 - 2018 - was released in December and, as always, it makes for great reading and in-depth research. Over the past three years, I have not purchased it as soon as the new publication became available. Instead, I've been buying my copy in January. Why? Well, I already have access to all the station schedules and lists I need for the B17 transmission season. So I can live without that part of the book. And I can wait a little longer to read the new articles presented in each edition. So, why pay "top dollar" for the book when, if you are happy to wait around 4-5 weeks, you can buy the book at a significant discount to the publisher's cover price. There is a big difference when buying and shipping the book to Australia. Here's the math: Buy in December direc...

4KZ QSL ARRIVES - JUST LIKE THE OLD DAYS!

4KZ QSL ARRIVES JUST LIKE THE OLD DAYS! I am no longer an avid hunter of QSL cards. I did that for many years, accumulated lots of verifications, and I don't feel the need to hunt anymore. However, I did get excited about sending a reception report to Al Kirton, the General Manager at 4KZ! He is also an amateur radio operator (VK4FFKZ). I heard 4KZ on their first night 's operation, but I was too busy recording the event and posting the news and YouTube video to this blog that I didn't get to writing a report. It was not until December 29 that I finally got around to sending a detailed report to Al. Today, I was delighted to receive the 4KZ QSL, a station bumper sticker, and a personal hand written note in an envelope displaying the NQ Radio logo on the front and a small 4KZ blue and gold sticker on the back. Nice work, Al. 👍👍 At the top of this post, you can see the full data 4KZ QSL. Obviously, this card has been prepared specially for the 5055 kHz o...

DX QUICK TIPS January 7, 2018 Hi Folks and welcome to my first post for 2018. I'm way behind in posting some of these DX tips below. A few of them are dating back to Christmas Eve! Sorry about that!  Busy times here at the moment, especially with my daughter's wedding coming towards the end of this month. She lives in Osaka, Japan but the wedding will be here in Australia near our Mount Evelyn home. She is marrying a fabulous Japanese man and we are very excited about the coming event. But because she is not here to take the reins, we are doing much of the legwork in pulling the preparations together. So, busy, busy, busy... Anyway, here are some items noted over the past two weeks. Several were special Christmas broadcasts, but most are daily services. 5910   VATICAN. Vatican R. - SM Galeria. Christmas Mass at 2045 with French commentary and a very strong signal. Parallel 9700 also heard but not as strong there, big signal, Dec 24. 7365  ...
