NEW: VOICE OF KHMER M'CHAS SROK - Audio Clip

Image
NEW STATION VOICE OF KHMER M'CHAS SROK The new station, Voice of Khmer M'Chas Srok, has only been on the air for a few days. I monitored it's broadcast this evening for the full 30 min transmission, and it puts a very solid signal into Mount Evelyn. Here is the entry from my logbook: 17860   TAJIKISTAN (perhaps….) Voice of Khmer M'Chas Srok. Site is unconfirmed at this time. Hummy transmitter on at 1125 then s/on 1130 in Cambodian with ID and opening anncts. Then a short burst of instrumental music before long talks with occasional mentions of Kampuchea, Khmer and Phnom Penh. Later, another short burst of music before ID, website and email addresses, then music to s/off at 1200. Big signal throughout with some slight txer hum from the beginning of the broadcast until 1150 when the hum just disappeared! I guess they must have found the fault!! The sound of the txer does smack somewhat of Dushanbe. Mar 22. And here is a recording of the last two minutes of ...

THE CRACK OF GUNFIRE COULD BE HEARD  FROM WITHIN THE RADIO STATION If you read my feature blog post on Radio Miraya at the Mount Evelyn DX Report back in October -  SPOTLIGHT: Radio Miraya - Sound of Sudan   - you may be interested in this recent report from right inside the radio station itself. The report is from Australian broadcaster, Irene Scott, formally of radio station Triple J FM in Sydney. Irene now lives in South Sudan and works at Radio Miraya. She posted her experiences in January on the radioinfo.com.au site. The article is well worth a read!!  Here's the link below: http://www.radioinfo.com.au/news/crack-gunfire-could-be-heard-within-radio-station Life's certainly not easy in South Sudan these days! 73’s and good DX everyone! RADIOS AND KITES

Image
RADIOS & KITES Here's something a little different! Last weekend, my wife and I left town for a short holiday on the Mornington Peninsula, about 95 km south west of Mount Evelyn. The whole peninsula is a wonderful tourist destination close to Melbourne city and is very popular with  both visitors and locals alike, especially during summer. Beautiful bayside and surf beaches, along with attractive inland gardens and wineries are just some of the features noted in this region. The family kite flying area By chance, last weekend's visit also coincided with the annual Rosebud Kite Festival. The weather was perfect for these brightly coloured objects as they bobbed about in the sunlight against a cloudless sky. A light onshore breeze was enough to get most kites up in the air easily, and hundreds of people took part in bringing their favourite kites down to the coast. There was also an opportunity to make and decorate your own kite, right there on the spot, and g...

SPOTLIGHT: Wonderful Woofferton!!

Image
SPOTLIGHT:  Wonderful Woofferton!! Last September, I wrote a post concerning a series of YouTube videos on the BBC's Woofferton transmitting station. Since that time, an article has come to light that I found quite interesting reading. It was originally published in the Short Wave Magazine of September 2003, and contains some further fascinating technical insights into this transmitting facility. And, although the article is more than 10 years old now, sites like this don't make many big changes. So I expect that most of the information in it is still very much relevant. I have placed the article on my cloud server so that you can download and read at your leisure. It is six pages long and contains some great photographs. Here's the link: *****  WONDERFUL WOOFFERTON!!  ***** On YouTube, Woofferton is put under the microscope by Senior Engineer, Dave Porter G4OYX. As you are aware, this site is still very much in operation on a daily basis, so it's inter...

Pirate Radio Activity In Syria

Image
PIRATE RADIO ACTIVITY IN SYRIA When it comes to pirate radio, I'm rather ambivalent towards the many European and US pirate stations that populate the shortwave bands. These operators are largely hobby enthusiasts who enjoy making their own entertainment programs, tinkering with the technical aspects of low-powered transmitters and antennas, and embracing the thrill of doing something illegal in the hope they don't get caught in the act. So, if that's what they want to do, I'm OK with that. But it doesn't interest me much. Mind you, the above comment is coming from one of the early CB radio operators who was happily transmitting away before the 27 mHz band became legalised in Australia in the mid 1970's!! For a short time I enjoyed those days. However, it quickly led me to become an amateur radio operator, where I could discuss technical "ham stuff" with other people who shared similar interests (and get away from all the "crazies" who ...
