SPOTLIGHT: Wonderful Woofferton!!
SPOTLIGHT: Wonderful Woofferton!!
Last September, I wrote a post concerning a series of YouTube videos on the BBC's Woofferton transmitting station. Since that time, an article has come to light that I found quite interesting reading. It was originally published in the Short Wave Magazine of September 2003, and contains some further fascinating technical insights into this transmitting facility. And, although the article is more than 10 years old now, sites like this don't make many big changes. So I expect that most of the information in it is still very much relevant.I have placed the article on my cloud server so that you can download and read at your leisure. It is six pages long and contains some great photographs. Here's the link:

On YouTube, Woofferton is put under the microscope by Senior Engineer, Dave Porter G4OYX. As you are aware, this site is still very much in operation on a daily basis, so it's interesting to see inside (and up close) a working transmitter operation. And, Dave "fires up" one of the 250 kW units specially for this video! The video tour is technical in nature, and will be of interest to DXers and SWLs, as well as regular amateur (ham) radio operators.
The original YouTube video link for this tour provided the entire program in about 8 or 9 separate sections, which was a bit of a pain to go through viewing it. Since that time, it has been edited so that you can watch the entire show in one YouTube link - much easier and more enjoyable. If you haven't seen it yet, click on the embedded video below to watch.

Finally, also worth checking out is the wonderful pdf history document "Fifty Years of Transmitting at BBC Woofferton 1943-1993 - A Social and Technical History of a Short Wave Station". Although the history stops at 20 years ago, some DXers may be interested in reading about how the station was first set up all those years ago.
I have also placed this history book on my cloud server for easy downloading. Here's the link:
