DX QUICK TIPS - June 25, 2021

DX QUICK TIPS June 25, 2021 June has been a somewhat disrupted month here at Mount Evelyn. The storms and gale-force winds that caused so much havoc on June 9 and 10 took me away from radio monitoring in order to clean up the mess ( see my June 15 post  for report and photos). As I write this on June 25, we have had four trees cut up and the stumps ground out. The fences will be down for quite a while, the driveway will require repair, and debris still needs to be carted away. The insurance company and allied services have been quite slow in dealing with our claim. However, this is understandable considering that hundreds of homes were destroyed or severely damaged, and many roads across Mount Dandenong remain closed. Some homes will be on generators for weeks to come. ⭐⭐ 2325   AUSTRALIA. STATION TEST - Wee Waa, NSW.  Station seems to have no name! BIG STORMS HIT MOUNT EVELYN

BIG STORMS HIT MOUNT EVELYN If you were wondering why there have not been any blog posts recently, we had a big storm hit last Wednesday, June 9.  Plenty of rain, but the winds were at gale force strength and blew for around 14 hours. It resulted in lots of destruction right through the Yarra Ranges and Mount Dandenong. Fortunately, our home was saved. We lost three beautiful big trees in our driveway. If the wind had been blowing in the opposite direction, one of the trees would have split our house in two. The other two trees also narrowly missed the homes of our two neighbours, falling into the yards of both properties. Frightening stuff! We also lost a 7 x 10m shade sail and fencing, while the driveway suffered some damage as well. Our power and Internet were off for three days. But many residents had it much worse - some have been told that the power will not be back on until June 20. It's making for a very cold winter for some in our community! SPOTLIGHT: KYRGYZSTAN ON SHORTWAVE

SPOTLIGHT: KYRGYZSTAN ON SHORTWAVE (This post is an edited version of an article I wrote for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine - April 2021 issue. Further details on this excellent publication are available at www.thespectrummonitor.com ) A challenging station to pick up on shortwave is Birinchi Radio, which is the public broadcasting corporation from the Kyrgyzstan capital of Bishkek.  The station has operated on the two frequencies of 4010 and 4820 kHz for many years now. However, the 4820 outlet is more difficult to hear due to its irregular schedule and lower power. The other frequency is more accurately 4010.21 kHz just outside the 75-meter band, listed as 100kW and can be heard with patience and a good antenna! Depending on seasonal propagation characteristics, for listeners in North America, try between 0000 and 0200 UTC when the all-darkness short path takes the signal over northern Europe and Greenland to Eastern North America...
