DX FOCUS: Latin Bonanza - PART 2!!

Image
DX FOCUS:   LATIN BONANZA - PART 2!! For the second consecutive summer evening (see my last Latin post a few days ago) , signals from South America are coming through here into Mount Evelyn. This time though, the 60 metre band is the one worth listening to, with stations from Peru and Brazil.  So, add these to yesterday's list of 49mb logs! 4747.1   PERU. R. Huanta Dos Mil - Huanta. Quite a good signal with talk, anncts and jingles at 1054, marred somewhat by TVI on Feb 21. 4774.9   PERU. R. Tarma - Tarma, Junin. Not particularly strong but copyable at 1005 with music programming and anncts. Had to listen in SSB to avoid TVI on Feb 21. 4789.83   UNIDENTIFIED. I suspect this might be R. Vision - Chiclayo, noted at 1056 with music and anncts but no ID. Reception was scratchy with a weak signal, and monitored till 1115, Feb 21. 4810   PERU. R. Logos - Chazuta, Tarapoto. Noted in the Shuar language with mainly upbeat talk (and the oc...

DX FOCUS: LATIN BONANZA

Image
DX FOCUS:  LATIN BONANZA There was some surprisingly good reception from South America last night (Feb 20) with signals from Brazil, Bolivia and Colombia. Interestingly, the best reception was on the 49mb. Very little was coming through on 60 mb. At this time of the year, the Latin DX season doesn't really start in south eastern Australia, so this reception last night was quite unusual for my location. Of particular note was the appearance of Radio Aparecida - this was not heard at all during 2013, so it's good to hear it back on the air again. 4885   BRAZIL. R Difusora Acreana - Rio Branco. This station is probably the most consistent 60mb Brazilian performer at Mount Evelyn. Always heard and R. Clube do Pará rarely breaks through. Ballad at 1000, then at 1002 a lovely clear and lively ID by the studio announcer, a bit of chat and more music. Good signal. 5910.08   COLOMBIA. Alcaraván Radio - Puerto Lleras. Hymns in a gentle Latin style at 0947, ID at 0948. ...

Asia 12015   Back in 2014, while aimlessly surfing YouTube, I came across a short video showing the Voice of Mongolia transmitter site. It's shot from a train that skirts right around the site and the local town of Khonhor. This video was made by ...

FROM THE LOGBOOK: Strong Asian DX Signals

Image
FROM THE LOGBOOK:   Strong Asian DX Signals Part of my listening last night was spent observing the movements of the Voice of Tibet as it hopped around the radio dial, trying to avoid jamming. I also noted that the Voice of Mongolia is still not on air, so this doesn't look good for that broadcaster. It's been absent for approximately 6 weeks now. KBS World Radio put in a beautiful signal to Mount Evelyn last night for it's English service. AND…..although not an Asian station, I did note the Wave Scan DX program from WRMI. 4010.04   KYRGYZSTAN. Birinchi Radio - Bishkek. Very weak signal at 1425 in what was probably the Kyrgyz language (hard to tell). Not regularly heard here at this time, Feb 17. 5910   JAPAN. Shiokaze (Sea-Breeze) - Yamata. Noted at 1338 with Japanese programming and a constant beeping jamming noise (but it could easily be heard through this racket), fair signal on Feb 17. Back here after a short time on 5985 kHz; better to be here be...

Image
SWAZILAND, BANGLADESH, VIETNAM and more! A good variety of stations were noted several days ago in the early morning period in Melbourne between 1800 and 1930 UTC.  A nice signal from Bangladesh, Madagascar is still wandering around the 60 metre band, but it was disappointing to see TWR Manzini's signal being spoilt by DRM hash. Read on…. 4765   TAJIKISTAN. Tajik Radio 1 - Yangiyul. Music program and anncts in Tajik for this national service at 1835. The signal was quite weak on this occasion, Feb 12. 4880   SOUTH AFRICA. SW Radio Africa - Meyerton. Fair signal with a political news program in English at 1845. Recorded ID at 1848. Some ute QRM on Feb 12. 4949.75   ANGOLA. R. Nacional de Angola - Mulenvos. The Canal A domestic service with a very poor audio level this morning despite a fairly good presence of the carrier. Mainly talks in Portuguese but with the occasional short burst of music from 1850, Feb 12.  5011.46   MADAGASCAR. R. M...

MICRO SURVEY: 17 MHz in One Hour

Image
MICRO SURVEY: 17 MHz in One Hour One afternoon, several days ago, I set myself a little challenge. Pick an international  shortwave band and try to note down everything that can be heard in one hour. Why? It's interesting to look at band occupancy in order to better understand how broadcasters are using the shortwave spectrum Investigate which regions of the world are being represented in any single hour on a specific wavelength Observe just how well the signals are reaching my receiver Analyse where these stations are targeting their broadcasts on that band at that chosen time, and To just challenge myself in seeing how many transmissions can be noted down in a limited time period. As current reception conditions on the high frequencies are continuing to provide excellent signals into Mount Evelyn during our summer season, I aimed for the 16 metre band as my afternoon challenge for that day. It turned out to be a good choice! There were lots of stations p...

GREAT DAYTIME RECEPTION CONTINUES

Image
MORE Good Daytime Reception! The layout of this week's MEDXR Blog is going to be a little different because …….well…..just to be different!!  :-)  I'm listing the logs in time periods as noted during the course of the week. Let me know if you find this layout useful or helpful. 2330 to 0230 UTC: This listening period is around my late morning and into lunchtime. The sun is high in the sky! During this time, the 25 metre band is pretty much dead on most days in high summer. So, it was nice to observe a few Asian signals making it through to my receiver. 11740   INDIA. AIR - Panaji, Goa. Fair signal with Tamil service with a talk which mentioned Pakistan several times, then an energetic song at 0030, Feb 6. 11840   CUBA.  R Havana, weak with Cuban music at 0023,  Spanish ID at 0025 on Feb 6 11855   PHILIPPINES. R. Veritas Asia - Palauig. Sinhalese service with talks at 0020, weak but readable on Feb 6. ...
