DX FOCUS:  LATIN BONANZA

There was some surprisingly good reception from South America last night (Feb 20) with signals from Brazil, Bolivia and Colombia. Interestingly, the best reception was on the 49mb. Very little was coming through on 60 mb. At this time of the year, the Latin DX season doesn't really start in south eastern Australia, so this reception last night was quite unusual for my location. Of particular note was the appearance of Radio Aparecida - this was not heard at all during 2013, so it's good to hear it back on the air again.

4885   BRAZIL. R Difusora Acreana - Rio Branco. This station is probably the most consistent 60mb Brazilian performer at Mount Evelyn. Always heard and R. Clube do Pará rarely breaks through. Ballad at 1000, then at 1002 a lovely clear and lively ID by the studio announcer, a bit of chat and more music. Good signal.

5910.08   COLOMBIA. Alcaraván Radio - Puerto Lleras. Hymns in a gentle Latin style at 0947, ID at 0948. Good signal before CRI's Russian service s/on at 1000.

5939.86   BRAZIL. R.Voz Missionária - Camboriú. Believed to be this one with a very weak signal on a good Latin night, Portuguese talks at 0945.

5952.40   BOLIVIA. R. Pio Doce - Siglo Veinte, Llallagua. Fair signal with bouncy songs and rapid talk at 0940. Although heard on a number of occasions last year, it's the first time heard in 2014.

6010.2    COLOMBIA. La Voz de tu Conciencia - Lomalinda. Some religious programming with occasional songs at 0933, fair to poor signal.

6059.8   BRAZIL. R. Super Deus é Amor - Curitiba. Very weak at 0920 and running // 6120 which was only slightly stronger.

6080   BRAZIL. R. Marumby - Curitiba. Weak with a music program and Portuguese anncts at 0840. First time heard in 2014. The clear channel helps here!! You need to catch this one before 0900 when RA-Shepparton s/on with the Tok Pisin service.

6120   BRAZIL. R. Super Deus é Amor - São Paulo. A weak signal with songs at 0920, // 6059.8.

6134.82   BOLIVIA. R. Santa Cruz. S/on at exactly 0900 with IDs, anncts and then into music around 0905. Caused a het with Brazil 6136.60 but easily separated using SSB. Quite a respectable signal and similar strength to the Brazilian at first, but as the night went on Santa Cruz became the more dominant signal of the two.

6136.60   BRAZIL. R. Aparecida - Aparecida. A strong signal with anncts, IDs and music, 0850. Freq is up quite high from it's registered assignment. At 0857, someone in the neighbourhood switched on an appliance and the Brazilian was pretty well covered up with hash. I went back to it about 30 minutes later and found it starting to fade out and Santa Cruz getting much stronger.

6180   BRAZIL. R. Nacional Amazônia - Brasilia. Nice signal on this clear channel at 0915, with chat and many "Bom Dia" greetings.
