Image
STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK February 23, 2016 FROM THE LOG BOOK 5066.38   CONGO D.R. R. Candip - Bunia. French programming with talks and occasional short local music selections. Very weak signal at 1823. Only occasionally heard here at Mount Evelyn, so I was very pleased to hear it again this morning, Feb 21. 7254.94   NIGERIA. VoNigeria - Abuja-Lugbe. Hausa service faded in just after the scheduled 0600 s/on in Hausa for WAf. It became quite strong by 0635, but was plagued by transmission drop-outs on a number of occasions for up to five minutes at a time. On the Twente receiver, R. Belarus is the dominant signal with VoN barely audible in the background. But here at Mount Evelyn, Belarus is barely audible and VoN is the dominant signal. Later, VoN was noted with the French service beginning at 0700, Feb 19. 7324.95   PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Wantok Radio Light - Port Moresby. This station continues to provide a good clear signal at 0945, with local Sunday eve...

ALL ABOUT ANTENNAS - A FIVE PART SERIES BY BOB GROVE W8JHD AVAILABLE FOR FREE DOWNLOAD Some years back, Bob Grove, publisher of Monitoring Times, wrote an excellent five-part series on antennas. While not especially detailed - after all, it is covered in a total of only 13 pages - it's a wonderful primer for beginner shortwave listeners and inexperienced amateur radio operators.  Covered in this series are: Radio waves Propagation Ground systems Antenna construction, size and gain Matching feed lines to the antenna Standing Wave Ratios and feed line loss Dipoles, long wires etc Accessories, connectors and adaptors Antenna switches .....and much more. The diagrams are simple, clear and easy to understand, and the technical language is kept to a minimum. Bob has made this beginners resource available FREE-OF-CHARGE which is most generous of him. He has always been a fine supporter of beginner and novice DXers, offering helpful advice where he can. ...

PREPARING FOR YOUR NEXT DXPEDITION - PART 2

The old Sangean ATS909 receiver in action at the Cape Schanck Coastal National Park. PREPARING FOR YOUR NEXT DXPEDITION Part 2 (The first part of this article can be found HERE! I wrote this article for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine -  December 2015 issue. Further details on this excellent publication is available at  www.thespectrummonitor.com ) *************************** NOTE: Click on photos for an enlarged image. Power If you are operating from a holiday shack, then there’s a fair chance that you’ll have plenty of AC power at hand. Extension power leads and multiple outlet power boards are very handy here. But if you are “off-the-grid”, then consideration must be given to batteries. Even if you are running a portable handheld receiver, backup batteries should be added to the list. For the larger communications receivers and transceivers, I use extra heavy-duty sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries and gel...

STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK - February 15, 2016

STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK February 15, 2016 STATION NEWS BULGARIA Dimtse Radio Erena - Kostinbrod . Several weeks ago, this station again shifted frequency for its Oromo service at 1700-1730 and Arabic 1730-1800 for EAf (Eritrea specifically). It was noted here this last weekend with a fair signal on Feb 13 at 1750. This station has been hopping around a bit recently - between 11855 kHz in December, then 11850 from Jan 1, and now here on 11845 kHz since Feb 3. I don't know why it changed from 11850 (perhaps to avoid splatter from the powerhouse R. Sanaa on 11860?), however, the new channel 5 kHz down seems fine at the moment. YEMEN or SAUDI ARABIA or WHEREVER……. R. Sana'a - Location Unknown . Noted as usual on 11860 kHz with music at 1756, then an ID and Arabic news at 1800. Here at Mount Evelyn, this is a powerhouse signal at this time of day. It's supposedly from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia…..but I don't think anyone has actually confirmed this transmitt...

PREPARING FOR YOUR NEXT DXPEDITION - PART 1

A lunchtime DXpedition in southern Queensland. PREPARING FOR YOUR NEXT DXPEDITION Part 1 (I wrote this article for "The World of Shortwave Listening" column of The Spectrum Monitor magazine -  December 2015 issue. Further details on this excellent publication is available at  www.thespectrummonitor.com ) *************************************** One of the joys of listening to shortwave radio is going portable - setting up the gear in a completely different location to discover what reception is like in some other part of the country (or indeed, the world!). As long as there have been radio enthusiasts, there have been DXpeditions. It’s just another part of the hobby that many of us have come to know and love. However, these days DXpeditions have also become a necessity, especially if you live in a small home or apartment with no space for external antennas. Or, perhaps you are forced to live with a high level of man-made noise in your home listening envir...

STATION NEWS AND THE LOG BOOK February 8, 2016 STATION NEWS PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Over the past week, many people around the world have monitored the test transmissions of the NBC service from Radio Bougainville at the Kubu transmitter site on Buka Island. Both 6020 and 3325 kHz have been in use at various times of the day. Here at Mount Evelyn, a booming signal was heard last night (Feb 7) at 1040 UTC with an interview program in Tok Pisin. Then the religious song "Here I am Lord" at 1058. ID as "NBC Bougainville" at 1102. However, nothing was heard on 3325 kHz at that time except for the Indonesian RRI Palangkaraya. The station has also been heard in California by Ron Howard and in Texas by Roland Richter between 1200 and 1400 on one or both frequencies, as well as in Japan and Europe. In addition, Timm Breyel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has today received an email verification confirming the station's operations. Radio Bougainville is expected to comp...
