 Some years back, Bob Grove, publisher of Monitoring Times, wrote an excellent five-part series on antennas. While not especially detailed - after all, it is covered in a total of only 13 pages - it's a wonderful primer for beginner shortwave listeners and inexperienced amateur radio operators. 

 Covered in this series are:
  • Radio waves
  • Propagation
  • Ground systems
  • Antenna construction, size and gain
  • Matching feed lines to the antenna
  • Standing Wave Ratios and feed line loss
  • Dipoles, long wires etc
  • Accessories, connectors and adaptors
  • Antenna switches
.....and much more. The diagrams are simple, clear and easy to understand, and the technical language is kept to a minimum.

Bob has made this beginners resource available FREE-OF-CHARGE which is most generous of him. He has always been a fine supporter of beginner and novice DXers, offering helpful advice where he can.
