SHORTWAVE RADIO IN  WORLD WAR 2: HALLICRAFTERS SCR-299 "VOICE OF VICTORY" - 1944 Film UPDATE: During some blog maintenance today, I noticed that there was a broken link for this video below. I have re-edited this popular 2015 post with the revised link, so all should be well now! It is a fabulous old film and well worth viewing (scroll down). Enjoy! ------------------------------------------- Regular readers of the Mount Evelyn DX Report will remember that some months ago I posted about stumbling across a Hallicrafters transceiver in a lighthouse museum while travelling along the New South Wales coastline late last year. Today, some more stumbling!! This time, I found an old documentary film from 1944 that has been beautifully restored by Jeff Quitney . It describes the role, manufacture and deployment of the huge Hallicrafters SCR299 shortwave receiver and transmitter, for use during the final stages of World War 2. This is truly a fascinating video and well worth s...

STATION NEWS & DX QUICK TIPS - October 9, 2021

Image
Shortly after Facebook came back online, this image appeared.....on Facebook! 😂  STATION NEWS & DX QUICK TIPS October 9, 2021 Adventist World Radio: 50 Years Anniversary Congratulations to AWR on reaching its 50th year of operations on shortwave. Quite an achievement, especially considering this broadcaster is going just as strong today as it ever was during its lifetime.  In October 1971, AWR began leasing shortwave airtime from the Sines relay station in Portugal with broadcasts to Europe and the USSR in 10 languages for 12 hours/week. Today, this major shortwave broadcaster is transmitting from relay transmitter sites in Sri Lanka, Zambia, Madagascar, Austria, Germany, Guam, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Romania, France, Taiwan, Tajikistan, and the USA. That is an impressive list of locations across the globe, encompassing a huge number of languages beamed for Asian, African, Middle Eastern and Latin American countries and ethnic communities. That's hundreds of hours of program...

SPOTLIGHT: TRANS WORLD RADIO AFRICA

Image
Photo: TWR Africa  SPOTLIGHT: TRANS WORLD RADIO AFRICA The global media enterprise, Trans World Radio (TWR), has for decades made intensive use of the shortwave and mediumwave bands to broadcast its Christian message to the world. Such is its global spread that we can find regional divisions known as TWR India, TWR Asia, TWR Europe, plus broadcasting facilities at Bonaire (in the Caribbean), Benin and Guam. The Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) sits near the southeastern coast of Africa, a landlocked country bounded by borders with South Africa and Mozambique. It is home to Trans World Radio Africa, with regional headquarters in Manzini, one of the country’s largest cities.  According to their website, the first shortwave broadcast began on November 1, 1974, from a 25 kW transmitter. Initial programmes went out in English, Afrikaans, German, Zulu, and Portuguese throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The transmitter site is located northeast of Manzini, some 37 km away...

HOW NOT TO GET A QSL CARD! - Video Version

Image
HOW NOT TO GET A QSL CARD! Video Version Tips for a better success rate. A few years back, I wrote a blog post about a reception report I spotted on the website of an international shortwave broadcaster. It was a pretty horrible report and illustrated everything that a shortwave listener should NOT do when hoping to receive a QSL card or letter. That post garnered a pretty big response from readers of this blog! So, I decided to come up with a YouTube version for those people who maybe don't read this blog but who are subscribers to my humble little YouTube channel. Also, there is some slightly different material in the video compared to the original post. Anyway, if you missed the post, then check out the video below. Here are the links mentioned in the video: A Closer Look at SINPO (YouTube Video) https://youtu.be/30oKuvGEU0E The Use and Abuse of SINPO (Mount Evelyn DX Report blog) https://medxr.blogspot.com/2017/11/the-use-and-abuse-of-sinpo.html Writing Useful Reception Repor...
