A18 - 100+ NEW FREQUENCIES MONITORED

Image
SEASON A18 BEGINS 100+ NEW FREQUENCIES MONITORED Since last Monday, I have been very busy scanning the international shortwave bands, checking out what has changed since the start of the A18 transmission season this week. And, as expected, there has been much movement across the spectrum by most of the major players.  Where possible, for each item I have tried to identify the former frequency used in the B17 season. But this can be quite hard at times because schedules can be quite complex, or drastically changed by the broadcaster, making it difficult to arrive at comparisons. There are well over 100 frequency changes observed below, so if you are missing your favourite station, then it may be listed below! Additionally, in my travels across the bands, I observed a few interesting signals that were not on new frequencies. These include 5845 (IBC), 5940 ( R. Deegaanka Soomaalida), 6030 (R. Oromiya), 12084.9 (Mongolia) and more. 👍 4835   AUSTRALIA. Ozy R - R...

SOLVING AN RFI PROBLEM IN A NEW MONITOR

Image
SOLVING AN RFI PROBLEM IN A NEW MONITOR Radio frequency interference is an ever-increasing problem for radio amateurs and shortwave listeners. A new monitor introduced into my radio shack has certainly made its presence felt, radiating very bad RFI hash across the shortwave spectrum. Here's one way I found of solving a very big problem. If YOU have stories of bad RFI problems in your radio shack monitor, feel free to share your experiences with us here in the comments below. Thanks for watching this video. CRI, CNR & CCTV TO MERGE

Image
CRI, CNR & CCTV TO MERGE In the past few days, news has come out of China that there is to be an amalgamation of the three big networks in that country - the China Central Television (CCTV), the China National Radio (CNR) and China Radio International (CRI). In a CNN news report released on March 21, Steven Jiang wrote that: The merger was revealed in a Communist Party document on a sprawling government reorganization program, championed by President Xi Jinping to reinforce the party's absolute control in all aspects of state governance. .........Voice of China is tasked with "propagating the party's theories, directions, principles and policies" as well as "telling good China stories," according to the document. It will be under the direct control of the party's central propaganda department. And: Now the most powerful Chinese leader in decades, Xi has cracked down hard on freedom of expression since taking office in late 2012. He has a...

49 METRE BAND BAND SCAN

Image
49 METRE BAND BAND SCAN Yesterday morning (March 13, 2018), I filmed a scan I did of the 49-metre shortwave band between 2035 and 2059 UTC from the Mount Evelyn radio shack. This is 7:35 to 7:59 am AEDT and the band proved to be quite busy. Stations heard included Amhara State Radio and Radio Fana (both from Ethiopia), Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation, Voice of America via the São Tomé relay station, Radio Algerienne, and many others.  The YouTube video below demonstrates the receiving facilities in the Yaesu FTDX3000 transceiver. It also shows some examples of tuning techniques that I use to pick transmissions out of the noise. The audio on the video was taken directly from the receiver's external speaker jack, put through the Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer and directly into the camera's external microphone jack. As always, thanks for watching! 73 and good DX to you all, Rob Wagner VK3BVW   Subscribe!! Follow @robvk3bvw ...

ABC VETERAN JOURNALIST SEAN DORNEY STRUGGLING WITH MND

Image
ABC Veteran Journalist Sean Dorney  Struggling with MND Many long-time listeners to the now-defunct Radio Australia will know the name, Sean Dorney. For four decades, Sean was the ABC's correspondent in Papua New Guinea and many parts of the Pacific. His adventurous life has been one devoted to delivering quality news reporting. His work was recognised through an Australian "Walkley Award" for outstanding journalism, for his coverage of the tsunami that hit the Aitape coast of PNG in 1998. Interestingly, Sean was both deported from PNG, and later upon his return to the country awarded an MBE by the Papua New Guinean Government! He is the author of Papua New Guinea: People, politics, and history since 1975 and The Sandline Affair: Politics and mercenaries and the Bougainville crisis . However, recently the online Catholic Leader  news reports that the 66 years old Dorney is finding life these days far more difficult than it once was when he was actively reporti...

DX QUICK TIPS - March 5, 2018

Image
DX QUICK TIPS March 5, 2018 As occasionally happens around here, we received notification that the power would be off for maintenance on our street all day on March 1 (UTC time). Fantastic! An opportunity for some low noise daytime reception from the comforts of home!   As I wasn't particularly inclined to haul the big 12v auto battery from the garage to the radio shack, I made do with some fully charged batteries in the little Tecsun PL-680 , plugged into my horizontal skyloop and other big antennas in the backyard. All the logs below were heard between 8 am and 2 pm local Australian Eastern Daylight Time. Many on this list are more commonly heard during mid-winter. But good reception conditions on the day, coupled with lower than average noise levels made it possible to extract some signals.  👍👍 5885   BOTSWANA. VoA - Moepeng Hill.
