INDONESIA ON SHORTWAVE: Then and Now - Part 1

Image
INDONESIA ON SHORTWAVE: Then and Now - Part 1 This is an edited version of an extended article that first appeared in my World of Shortwave Listening column in the August 2025 issue of The Spectrum Monitor magazine. Further details on this excellent publication are available at www.thespectrummonitor.com Click on all images to zoom in for a closer look. Only a few decades ago, Indonesia was an intriguing destination for shortwave listening, posing a challenge for DX enthusiasts. Besides the national broadcaster and its various regional outlets, many local government low-powered stations occupied the tropical bands between 2 and 5 MHz. Indeed, the country has a long and rich history of using shortwave radio for both domestic and international broadcasts. With a vast archipelago comprising over 17,000 islands, shortwave radio has played a vital role in connecting remote areas of Indonesia and reaching global audiences. DXING OUTDOORS - Shortwave radio in the field

Image
DXING OUTDOORS Shortwave radio in the field Regular visitors to the MEDXR blog and YouTube channel know how much I enjoy operating radios in 'the great outdoors' . Anytime is the perfect time to embrace fresh air while taking the radios outside. Many YouTube and Facebook followers have told me how much they enjoy my outdoor DXing videos. There are 28 videos now, spanning the past ten years!  There are even recordings of stations that have now vanished. And filming was done in all kinds of weather.  So, it’s time to gather them into one YouTube playlist. Future outdoor videos will also be added to this collection. You may even smile at a few of the early ones....they're a bit rough in parts! But we had great fun along the way. Click on the Playlist link below to take you straight to the list. And bookmark the link for future viewings of new stuff. 👉  DXing Outdoors - Shortwave radio in the field  👈 73 and wishing you the best of DX! Rob Wagner VK3BVW ...

RADIO AUSTRALIA - THE DARWIN TRANSMITTERS

Image
RADIO AUSTRALIA: THE DARWIN TRANSMITTERS (Original 2014 post: Updated September 15, 2025) Many long-time DXers will remember the existence of the wonderful Radio Australia transmitting facility on the Cox Peninsula near Darwin between 1966 and 2010. The 250 kW transmitters were well-received throughout the world, boasting a powerful and far-reaching signal. Listeners throughout Asia could easily pick up the Australian broadcaster. During the 70s and 80s, RA had a huge listening audience across the region, numbering in the millions, especially in Indonesia. I well remember visiting the RA studios in Melbourne in the mid-1970s and hearing RA staff discuss the thousands of letters they received from Indonesian listeners every week. Heady times, indeed! Times have changed, and those days have gone. Radio Australia's Darwin facility has been dismantled and the property returned to the original Aboriginal Belyuen people. The final years of operation at the Darwin transmit...
