Back in 2014, while aimlessly surfing YouTube, I came across a short video showing the Voice of Mongolia transmitter site. It's shot from a train that skirts right around the site and the local town of Khonhor. This video was made by fellow Australian DXer Mark Fahey on a trip there 16 months earlier. Here's what Mark said about it:
"The Voice of Mongolia transmits from this shortwave antenna farm at Khonhor, a town 30km to the south east of Ulan Bator. The video was taken while traveling on the train from Beijing, a 30 hour journey. The railway loops around the transmitter site, almost completing a full circle. The video includes a close up pass of the antennas, passing through the Khonhor township and then the railway once again loops to show a final view of the antennas with the town in the foreground. Recorded around 1PM Ulan Bator time on Thursday October 4th 2012."
I searched for the Khonhor township on Google Maps and came up with the location of the antennas. The transmitter site is located south of the town.

Take a look for yourself by opening Google Maps and typing (copy and paste!) the following coordinates:
47.79995674748781, 107.17648196663046
And now, here's the video:
Congratulations to Mark Fahey on spotting this site during his rail journey through Mongolia. Great work!
We can be thankful for the Voice of Mongolia still being present on the shortwaves! It's another opportunity to shoot for some great DX!
73's everyone and good DX to you all,

Thanks for finding my video on YouTube! I remember passing the antenna's like it was just yesterday - yes you did find the right location on itouchmap. Ulan Bator is only a short distance (about 20 minutes by train) beyond the point where I ended the YouTube video. The video I posted on YouTube is actually only a short edit from a longer video I have that covers the whole journey from the antenna farm all the way to Ulan Bator's railway station. I spent almost a week exploring the Ulan Bator region before heading further north into Sibera. This was all part of a great train trip - Beijing to Helsinki via Moscow. The whole journey took three weeks totally by local and regional trains, jumping off often for a few days in interesting towns.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Voice of Mongolia, they missed a few days broadcasts (i'm not sure why?) but I notice they have already posted tomorrow (Sunday's) broadcast on the web, so hopefully it will go to air, they are certainly announcing the short-wave frequencies in the program.
If you want to be a time shifter and listen to tomorrows broadcast a day early just surf to this URL: http://vom.mn/en
Cheers,
Mark
Mark, Nice to hear from you. Also good to hear about your great train journey from Beijing to Helsinki. Wow, that sounds like a most wonderful trip!! Lucky man!
DeleteNo one seems to know why the station is off the air. I think the domestic services are still working though. Perhaps they will return tonight.
Best wishes
Rob
FEB 26 UPDATE:
Delete12084.89 MONGOLIA. VoMongolia - Khonhor. This station has returned after an absence of some weeks. First noted here on Feb 26 with IS at 0859, then full ID at the start of the English transmission, followed by the news. The signal was at a fair level and the audio was of a reasonable quality. But there was considerable splash from the very strong RA-Brandon (12080kHz) which also s/on at 0900. Good to see it back in business!
