RADIO SUTATENZA

RADIO SUTATENZA FROM 1973
Transcribed and Translated by Alfredo Cañote

Here is the fifth in our series of Rare Radio Recordings. A regular reader of MEDXR and Twitter friend, Alfredo Cañote, has kindly supplied the transcribed text for this recording and included an English translation.

RADIO SUTATENZA, Bogota, Colombia.
From 1947 to the 1980s, Radio Sutatenza beamed cultural and educational programs throughout Colombia via a range of mediumwave and shortwave transmitters across the country. Founded by Catholic priest Monsignor José Joaquin Salcedo Guarin, this broadcaster played a vital role in educating rural people and peasants. As well as the three shortwave outlets of 5075 (25kW), 5095 (50kW), and 6075 kHz (10kW) in Bogota, there were mediumwave stations in Cali, Magangue, Medellin, Barranquilla.

As well as radio broadcasting, the overseeing media organisation Accion Cultural Popular also produced a newspaper, booklets, training courses, recordings and a range of educational materials. Throughout rural Colombia, families, friends and entire villages would gather around the radio for reading, writing, mathematics, health and hygiene lessons and programs. Radio Sutatenza is remembered as an important part of a cultural revolution that caused a transformation of rural life in Colombia. In the early 1990s, the station suffered major financial problems, forcing it to close.

I made this recording on August 21, 1973, at 0958 UTC (7:58 pm local time in Melbourne), just before the top-of-the-hour station identification and the listing of network transmitters. Once again, Alfredo Cañote has done a wonderful job of deciphering the station announcements through the wobbly heterodyne whistle and the typical atmospheric noises and static of the tropical bands!

Below is the recording, transcription and translation for you to follow along while listening to Radio Sutatenza.

  1. This was a very important station for Colombia, first for the cultural and educational aspect oriented towards the peasantry, and later because it was one of the Colombian broadcasters that were best heard in many regions of the world.
